just got a USGI walnut stock in for the M14 and am looking for some tips for refinishing it. at first i thought to just sand it and re-stain it but i thought i may end up sanding too much off. just wondering if anyone knows of a good technique for this. thanks in advance.

If it has a Linseed oil finish, just mix up some ammonia/water (2 parts water to 1 part ammonia), spray it on, and go at it with a good scrub brush. Rinse well in the bathtub.
You may have to do it a couple of times. but it works well. Steam out the dings with a soldering iron and a wet rag.
I re-did a Husqvarna stock last winter, and my total time with sandpaper was less than 5 minutes.

Wood is wood. Use the same techniques and products used on fine furniture. Little or no sanding is required, usually.

Depending on your spouse this may be better done when the lady is not home lmao.

Try "heirloom furniture stripper" at Home Depot, ICI Paint's, General Paint or Shemin Willaims. This stuff ROCKS! Plus it does not that damaging to the wood.

+1 on the Circa stripper.
Easy to use, very predictable, fairly inoffensive to the senses such that I routinely use it indoors.
In fact I just got home with a fresh can of the stuff.

I did my Model 1897 Winchester Trenchgun wood with TSP, the stock had a really dirty oiled finish and the TSP cleaned it up very well, then I steamed out a few dents and finished it with DBLO, no sanding, just a final clean up with some OOOO steel wool.
