Strongest 308 Win brass for the M305, M14?

O.k, from what I could search there's no true 7.62 Nato unprimmed brass being made today for purchase.

So for my Norinco M305 I'll need to use 308 Win brass for 7.62 Nato loads. However, there might be a problem of stretching the already thin walls of the 308 Win brass too much due to the extra headspace on the Norinco.

So my question is who makes the strongest (thickest wall) 308 Win brass available for sale as new, unprimmed cases?

It's too bad Norinco did'nt chamber their M14 rifles to 308 Win.
 
First of all, no matter what you read on the internet .308 and 7.62 NATO brass are the same. You can fire .308 in a 7.62 NOTA chamber without a problem. No such thing as 7.62 NATO reloading dies. As far as brass goes why not look for some once fired IVI or Lake City brass?

I have not shot the gun, yet. I measured my headspace using a Forster 308 Win no-go gauge and a piece of Scotch tape added to the bolt face of the Norinco M305 to make up the extra length for the 7.62 Nato chamber.

The Forster 308 no-go gauge says it's 1.634 thou.

My caliper measured the Scotch tape to be 2 thou thick.

My M305 bolt closed about 90%. I did this by just pushing the bolt lightly with my fingers (the extractor, ejector, and operating rod were removed).

The Forster 308 no-go gauge of 1.634 + 2 for the tape = 1.636 headspace.

I think I did it right from what I've read here and there on Gunnutz and the net.

Dimensionally yes. But 7.62 cases are thicker.

I've got a ton of IVI .308 cases I'm planning on using for my M14. The IVI cases I've got all seem to weigh in about 2gr heavier than the Remington cases I've got. They both chamber the same, so its got to be thicker brass, which means it should last longer after stretching (with "partial" sizing anyways)

Also as someone say previously 7.62 NATO brass a thicker than commercial .308. It mean that with some powder/powder laod you might get overpressure in a 7.62 Brass extra care MUST be taken

The usual rule of thumb is to reduce powder charges 10% when using military brass of any calibre.

i wouldn't be too enthusastic about ivi brass- i've ran a bunch through my dillon 550 and had the rim pull off, even though properly lubed- it took far more power on both ends of the stoke to resize it as well as ketting stuck about every 4th round- i now consider it the same as berdan primed- in to the garbage with it

.308 and 7.62x51 Nato brass are NOT the same, the Nato brass is quite a bit heavier and thicker. The Nato military chamber drawings are slightly larger than the .308 Winchester. The biggest concern would be headspace from commercial ammo to military. Loads should be reduced while using military brass because of its less internal volume. If you think they are exactly the same , then fire a factory .308 round out of your milsurp rifle.Measure the unfired round before and after at the datum line,you're in for a shock.

Dimensionally (outside) the brass is the same, military brass is thicker, therefore heavier. And at no point in my post did I state the same load data can be used in both .308 and 7.62 NATO cases. There was probably a few million rounds of 7.62mm NATO fired out of .308 target rifles when the DCRA still used issued ammo for competition. Every year the DCRA sends a rifle team to Bisley, England to shoot their Imperial Meeting. The Canadians all take their .308 target rifles and shoot 7.62 NATO RG issued ammo.
These target rifles are worth several thousand dollars each, I doubt anyone would risk the damage if this practice was unsafe. On top of that, if the NRA UK thought it was unsafe (they are very anal about proof testing and such) they would not allow it.

aside, is that headspace gauging valid? I've always wanted to measure mine but never new how.
 
Just like you guys I do go shooting with my M14 and notice things... I use Winchester and some IVI brass I noticed that Lapua is about the same thickness is IVI which I believe is military spec. I never measured it I am just going by looking at it. Lapua is to expensive for me to use:D
 
i paid 15$/100 pieces of win brass, might have to dump it all actually
whats bad with federal?
 
I have got some "PMC Bronze" ammo it`s "308 Winchester (7.62 nato)
147 Grs. FMJ-BT" printed on the box. Please let me know if it`s safe for m14?
