Stuck case removal

I was using my Dad's 88 the other night with reloads that I had made and shot several times with no problems. Well one shell would not eject after firing, but with a little convincing I somehow managed to separate the case from the case head.:( I called my gunsmith and he suggested a rather unique method of removing it. I was told to close the bolt and insert my cleaning rod from the muzzle (carefully!!) and let it gently touch the bolt face. Then mark the rod at the muzzle with a marker, and remove the rod and make another mark on the rod approx the length of the case plus one quarter inch. Now is where it gets interesting. I was then instructed to insert toilet paper down the muzzle and pack it in the headless case/chamber right up to that second mark on the cleaning rod. Then I was told to raise the rod approx 6-8 inches off the toilet paper and allow it to drop on to the toilet paper. I was told it should take 3 or 4 attempts before the case fell out, but for me it came out on the first try. The best thing about this method is if it fails, you have done no damage to the rifle.

Thanks to smoji for the excellent advice!!

Check your sizing die. Sounds like you may have moved the shoulder back too far.

What caliber????????????

Now that is something I've never heard of before.
Right up there with watching a guy remove a pilot bearing from a crankshaft using grease.

The caliber of the rifle is 308 (is there really any other calibers out there??) I have been reloading for a few years now and this has been my first negative experience with my reloads. I am going to dismantle these reloads and discard the brass because upon very close inspection I found a couple more cartridges with minor defects in the brass right at the same spot that the above mentioned case failed. I also rechecked my load data against three reloading logs and all of them said my powder was below max for that combination of components. I also dismantled one cartridge and verified the charge weight. So I am thinking maybe that brass has reached the end of it's usefullness and it should be tossed out.

If you are loading for more than one .308 and mixing the brass up and using the same sizing die set up for all, that may be your problem. You are correct to toss all your brass and start with new brass.

You need to set your die for each rifle you are loading for and not to mix brass from one rifle to another if you want maximum life from the brass. It is important the shoulder does not get pushed back on sizing. That creates a reload with headspace and that leads to head separations.

man we've been doing that on the big trucks for years much easier on the crank and less chance of damage same as shoe leather to replace connecting rod bearings temporarly works perfectly for roughly 1,000km

Am I missing something here? Wouldn't you push the shoulder back a bit when you full length resize a case everytime?

I had a stuck case with my 30 carbine I just used a ar15 chamber brush(little bigger then .30 cal) I pushed it through the chamber end through the stuck case and pulled it back out case came out easy
