Anyone have any ideas on how I can get a stuck case out of my RCBS FL decap/sizeing die?

The rim is pulled right off the case.

take the decapping rod out of the die. I usually unthread the nut, put a spacer under there and tighten the nut down to bring the resize button through the case mouth. The find a rod that fits down through the die and the case mouth and drive the case out

I tried the search, found absolutely nothing which is what happens every time I do a search here. Please tell me more about the stuck case remover.

The base is completely off the case as I've already tried to drive it out :(

Get a suitably sized tap(big enough to bite into the case, but not go through it), gently screw it into the case and pull out the case.

Thanks Sunray, I'll have to look around to see what I have. Hopefully this can be sorted out soon, was looking forward to taking care of a few hundred cases while on leave.

I made myself one.

7/32 drill bit

1/4 thread tap

1 1/2 inch long 1/4" bolt

half a dozen 1/2" washers, the case has to be able to fit inside so may have to go bigger

one 1/4 washer and one 3/8 washer

drill out primer pocket with the drill bit

tap the hole

put the 1/2" washers so they are around the stuck case and rest on the die

use the other washers to make the hole smaller so your 1/4" bolt doesn't just fall thru

insert the bolt into your newly threaded primer pocket hole, and tighten it up, it will pull the case out of the die. Mine was STUCK so I have faith that you won't strip that tapped hole even tho it's brass

clean out your die, reassemble, and go to town.

What sunray described only works if the head has been ripped off, and an easyout might be better than a tap in that situation. The walls are really thin and easy for the tap to screw up your die.

Rommel that's a very good idea and will be put together for the future.... problem at the moment is that I've tried to get the damn thing out already and the base of the case is right off. I can see through the damn thing :( I may have to go see Jeff at Valley guns to see if he can do anything with it.

Thanks again all for your help.

What Sunray described is exactly how you get a stuck case out. You can use a suitably sized socket instead of the washer stack. You tap the solid head of the cartridge not the thin walls.

A tap is not going to get a really stuck case out on it's own, and it requires drilling out the primer pocket as well, and a washer stack or something similar to exert some force on the case and against the die. He also said big enough to bite into the case but not go through it... that really sounds like he's describing how to remove a case when the head has separated.

Petrock, you could try an easyout, but also all the manufacturers will get that out for you if you send it back to them assuming you didn't screw up the die somehow.

i know this might seem unorthodox, but I've had this happen to and I used another technique.
Pair of pliers, G96

sprayed the G96 into the die, pulled the brass with pliers.
then cleaned the die
I know people will jump on me, but I found it has worked very well (308WIN case)

Nothing wrong with that if it works. All depends how stuck the case is I would say.

Rommel's idea should work. I belive he only means to use a small enough tap as not to drill out the whole case head. You will need the meat in the base of the shell to thread into. What caliber is the case in question?

Yeah, 1/4 tap is just a bit bigger than a large primer. I like the 1/4 tap because it has fairly meaty threads.

A search on the internet would probably find you the information you need. RCBS makes a stuck case remover which does work well. Also, don't forget to squirt in some penetrating oil to get in around the case.
Then, remember to lube properly the next time around, as you have already experienced the pain of doing this.

Rommel you're correct. The head is completely off the case, so I basically have a brass sleeved die at the moment. I've given the die to a friend that has some equipment at his house and experience with tooling. He's going to drill out the case just enough to weaken the walls and allow the case to collapse and be removed.

I was lubing the cases, lubed every single one. I have no idea what happened, may simply have been a case with a weak rim or it had a blemish on it that I didn't notice.
