Stuck for a 1911

I borrowed an STI Spartan for our weekly IDPA match last Firday, and all I can say is, and this is the firs time I have ever shot the gun, we had targets out to 20 yards, were ever that front sight was pointed, that is were the bullet hit. The guns is super tight and reliable, it is out of this world, definately the best bang for the buck when it come to a 1911.

You should spend some time considering the caliber as well. 45 ACP can be pricey if you do not reload. 9MM is quite a bit more affordable.

This will narrow your choices down a bit as well.

It's my only 1911, but I really like my SW1911. I've got a couple (4) thousand rounds through it, with the only problems being a couple of FTRB, before I replaced the recoil spring.

Start with a Norc, My Buddy was where you are now and I told him get the NORC,the price is great,in the States ,when they could get them lots of the custom shops used them as bases for their builds.

So,anyways he picks up a Springfield Mil-spec[It is very nice],and down the road I score a Springfield G.I.

This is how it starts, and then you're hooked, So later I get a Norc 1911A1,loan it to him, havn't got it back yet, that was 6mo ago,and now he just ordered one off of Can Am.

The Norcs,as been said on here are kind of rough in finnish, sharp edges and such, but are what the 1911 use to be.they also feel heavier for some reason.

Do you see where this is going, don't get started with 1911s

$296 per 1000 .45s doesnt really break me, i wont be going through 1000 that fast, im still debating the shooting sports

I have a love-hate relationship with 1911s. Every single one I've ever owned had one kind of issue or another. Picky, jamming, unable to lock open on last round, ejecting brass all over the place, etc etc.

If you want a gun that always works, you'll have a helluva time with a 1911 of any kind. They all seem to have something... and you'll need luck on your side to find a good one.

I've sold all of mine but one... Im on the Glock side now.

1911 is still my all time favourite design, but damn they're finicky.

So true. It is visually a work of art. When it works it's stunningly accurate. Of course I always have one in my safe. But when I get to carry, it will be a Glock.

...I myself with my limited experience can't really say much but Norc's are ugly and horrible shooters with stiff triggers unless you want to buy aftermarket everything...

Ugly? O.K. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'll give you that.

Horrible shooters? Sorry, myth.

Stiff triggers? Yep, absolutely right - downright awful. But you can get Gunnar to go over the whole thing for $100 returned to you, this will take care of the horrible trigger (heck, you'll have a better trigger than any off the shelf 1911). As a matter of fact, he'll do more than just the trigger - the whole thing will run like a swiss watch.

Aftermarket everything? Somewhat of an exaggeration. I had the sights replaced on mine, it's true. Apparently, from what I've read, the new ones have better sights - can anyone substantiate this? Other than that, I've replaced nothing.

Used NP-29 w/adustable rear sight: $325
Gunnars magic: $125 (one-way shipping included)
Front sight & installation: $70
Total cost for an ugly, tuned 1911 that puts my other (more expensive & better looking) guns to shame: $520

Spend the rest on a reloading setup, you'll need it once you get your pistol back from Armco! :D

22lr - Glad you like your Tangfolio. I have a few expensive guns and really appreciate them too! Have you tried a Norc or just quoting hearsay? No offence meant, just curious...

Just my $.02

Although I have never had a Norc 1911, I would recommend one. Its cheap, allows you to #### with it all you want without feeling too bad, allows you to learn the ins and outs of both the model and manufacturer, add a ton of parts, bubba and hack to your hearts content. If I was starting out again tomorrow, I would buy one for just those reasons.

Once I got all cool and expert-ish on a Norc......then it'd be a Colt.

Yes I have tried a few (few as if more than two) norc's and as open minded as I am I still recognise norc right away. Trigger and slide fit mostly gives them away. And accuracy. I hate outshooting my guns, lets just say whenver I tried norc I instantly missed my tanfo. I agree, it is probably still more cost effective to buy norc and replace barrel bush and mess with slide fitting. Thread started as what to buy for over 1000$ and I think Tanfoglio is a very good mid-range priced 1911.

I'm told Dan Wesson is owned and manufactured by CZ. The Dan Wesson 1911 I looked at today ($1239 BTW) had Czech markings on the barrel and slide. Fit and finish was well done and no play between the slide and the frame but I never fired one so I can't really comment past the cosmetic/asthetic part.
