Students Looking to Hunt

I have 6 lee enfields... one of them has put more meat in the freezer and more throphies on the wall than any other gun I own... but like i said before find someone willing to go out and "show you the ropes"... it will be safer and more enjoyable!... and have fun!

Im in the same boat as you Ilovepotatos, But im waiting till next year... maybe winter and do some coyote hunting for practice.
A mentor is a really good idea! I want a mentor!!

Idea- People that would be willing to Mentor should have Mentor beside their name! or a new color?

Have taken your courses yet?

wow kind of pushing for time..
if i were you,s..
id plan the rest of this year getting all paper work and tags in order..then target practice like the ammo is free:D..
then try and plan out a trip next year with someone with a bit of experience behind them..
but then again:redface:the first deer i was involved in on the kill, iknew shet of gutting and butchering..
but using a bit of common sense,
all worked out great:)
good luck, and welcome to the great sport of hunting:50cal::50cal:

We were going to go down today to get the hunting book. But like H Wally would know, our friend Beaudin is a very...laid back guy.

He never gave me the call he was supposed to, and I'm just assuming he completely forgot and went on to play his guitar or something. Hahaha

Hunting would not be expensive for me. I live at home and my parents are willing to pay me for the expenses to hunt. They get to eat the food and don't do any of the work. Makes sense, right?

I already have plenty of deer capable guns. If I went hunting, I would probably take my CZ-858 deer hunting because I would be able to use it's semi auto function to do a quick second shot if I missed.

I also have a bolt action 12 gauge shotgun I can use to hunt birds...but it's not fixed quite yet.

I don't have to pay for my hunting licence, my tags or the ammo used to shoot the deer. As long as I find a deer spot somewhat close to Duncan or Nanaimo, I should be okay.

If anyone from Victoria would like to volunteer to take me and a friend out to show us the what's what of hunting next year I would really appreciate it. Is there anything cool to hunt on Vancouver Island while I wait for next year's season?

"I have prettty much the same deal with my wife."

Are either of your families adopting??
i spend a fortune hunting....but it's what i enjoy!

Jeez.

I want to be supportive of a new hunter and not a gun snob but in my opinion getting a rifle you can be confident will place an accurate shot into the vitals of an animal out to 200 yards and practising at the range to do that is more important than having one that has the capability of a quick second shot.

I've missed lots of animals with the first shot with a bolt action rifle and a "slow" better aimed second shot got the animal.

I have bolt actions, but they're all very heavy and relatively "nice" guns I wouldn't want to scratch up. The 858 is more accurate than I am, and I personally prefer it's sights to my Mosin Nagant's anyways.

youre going to catch quite a lot of flak from the older crowd taking what is basically a civilian AK hunting.

without getting into a debate with black rifle fans as to the effectiveness or suitability of such a weapon for hunting deer, let me just suggest that in your position as a newbie just getting started in hunting and looking for a mentor you would probably be a lot better received if you showed up with a traditional hunting weapon instead of what people will think is an AK.

just my opinion - take it with a grain of salt :)

unfortunately the above post is correct.

The CZ would make a perfectly accpetable black tail rifle but it will create some challanges.

Your comment about heavy bolt actions:
try holding steady with your CZ while sucking wind or coping with 'buck fever' ! Your Nagent will lay out there steady as a rock, the cz will drift all over.

Also if you plan on missing with the first shot guarented you wont get a second shot.
Any way you are way far ahead of yourself cause you don't know where this deer is that you want to shoot!
