Ok I'm always looking for reasons to hunt so I'm trying to expand my "to-hunt" list. Now understand I love the challenge of man and science versus animal and instinct, for me it's not about the kill as much the hunt and then the eating. Coyotes are a problem almost everywhere now, so other than killing them for the protection of pets and livestock what value do they have? Are the hides still worth money? do ya eat them? or are coyotes actually an animal we can kill just for the sport of it? This may sound stupid but give me some reasons to buy a new rifle and start coyote hunting- please..

You can sell the hides to the auctions, and I'll give you five dollars to eat one. I don't like coyotes one bit, and I shoot them on sight. Particularly in one area I like to hunt. You see nothing but dead deer. The dog's don't give the fawns a chance. The pick them up as fast as they come out. I know it's nature, but so's me dropping them like a rock. Survival of the quickest. If they can outrun my bullet, then they deserve to live. :D

How do you go about selling the pelts? Can you sell them in Ontario? I was under the impression i couldn't unless I had some sort of permit or something.

Sell them to a trapper or get a trapping license.
I hear they are edible... I am loathed to try but deadly curious.

There is a local trapper here who buys the, he would rather buy them whole and skin them him self.

You can ship the hides to one of the two fur auctions in Ontario, but if you plan on getting rich from the hides forget it. Eastern coyotes do not sell for as high as Western and usually average $20-$25, some you may get $40 to $50 and some may not sell. The royalty for the government and commision for auction place for selling it is also taken off. Coyotes in Southern Ontario are plentyful and they eat fawns, rabbits, turkey, farm animals, cats and dogs, etc, etc. But most of all they are hard to kill. If you want the most $ for the hides then you will want to hunt them when the hides are in the prime (winter), without any mange and not now to late fall. If you are going to skin one don't do it in the basement unless you live alone or you will be alone?

You can shoot coyotes with a bow instead of a rifle,i've had them stop 5 feet from me trying to figure out what i was. Good practice for bow hunting for you and to see how well your camo and scent works.

coyotes

Nothing goes to waste in nature. If I shoot a mangy coyote, I leave it lay. I dump the skinned carcasses in the field and they are picked clean in short order.

If you skin immediately after shooting them, it is easy and takes about ten minutes.

You can sell the coyotes, skinned, fleshed and dried at the fur auctions......I spoke with two guys that sold at the auction. One aveaged$64 and the other averaged $82. I didn't see the checks, but it does seem like the prices are better this year than last.

If there are hutterite colonies around, they will usually skin, flesh and stretch for about $10 each. Then you can send them to the auction, or get them tanned, an additional $70 for tanning, then sell privately or on Ebay etc.

As far as eating goes, keep in mind that coyotes usually don't have much fat on them, so the older ones tend to be stringy, and should be ground up and used as you would burger, or suasage meat.

The younger ones or the ones that do have some fat on them, and sometimes they are very fat, are better used in stir fry recipes, after all the fat is removed of course. Song dog stir fry with stcky rice is a very good.:D

Hot sauces and marinades work well.

Most mexican food recipes can be used with coyote meat substituted for beef of pork.

I think oriental, esp. Korean recipes really allow coyote meat to be used to it's full potential. One excellent cookbook is "25 New Ways to Wok Your Dog"

If the thought of eating coyote somehow distresses you, get someone else to prepare and cook it.

Some people are just finicky maybe.
I know if my inlaws had helped prepare dinner here last time, they would not have enjoyed it as much.:D

coyote pelts

If you don't mind going over the border into York Region just over the border there is a guy named Don Fagg on McCowan Road just north of the Mount Albert Side Road that may take the kills. He is a taxidermist and in the book.

I also shoot them when I see them, usually around turkey season. I've had them come out to take my decoys and done them with No 6 turkey loads no problem at 50 yrds. Hides aren't worth a crap though that time of year.

'yotes aren't prime now and you probably won't find a buyer. As with any furbearers, how you care for the pelt and skin it plays a major factor in the final price. For coyotes, you must "case skin" the animal if you hope to sell it at auction. Boarding and drying is a must. The late Fall & Winter months are the best time for hunting fur.

I got my last (and 27th) coyote of the season last sunday. She was a nice white/yellowish female and her fur was still very good. I may get her tanned because she is very nice to look at, by far the nicest I got all season. I got fed up with the auctions last season when my private buyer was getting more than twice what she paid for them so I just found a native girl back home who makes gloves, mitts, coats etc, out of hides. I kept her in fur for most of the season. I should be getting back some gloves and mitts she made us for getting her the hides. You can make money at it, but trapping is probably the easier route here. They stink like heck, but you'll get used to it when you've skinned a few. Like Redfrog said, they're much easier when they're warm.
Shoot as many as you can, the ranchers and deer sure appreciate it.

Silly question, but since people here are from Ontario - What are the regs for shooting 'yotes, say if one of my girlfriend's clients has them on a hundred acres private land, and they are eating her chickens?

PM me.

hmm, Interesting- If it pays for my box of bullets ill kill coyotes. Anyone have any good websites for proper cleaning/skinning these guys ? Also wondering about the private land? Is this another knock on farmers doors and ask if I can shoot coyotes?

Anyone have any coyote hunting pics?
