Howdy... I'm from Saskatchewan, I train and teach tactical close quarters combative stuff (edged and impact weapons), but I'm a total greenhorn to the firearms world. A Sensei I train with has finally convinced me to go through him for testing and my PAL and possibly restricted PAL and start doing some target shooting, etc. Another friend literally DEMANDED I check out this forum, and to be honest, I'm pretty blown away all you guys are Canadian... Wicked!:ar15:

I'm interested in starting my search for my first serious firearm. No more .22 plinkers or 12-gauge single shot. I was nosing around for a tactical style shotgun, as well as a decent non-restricted, semi auto rifle.

I was looking for something relatively affordable to start, hell, I don't even know how expensive different ammo is yet...

Obviously, I'd prefer something slick like an AR, HK or something else likely prohibited or restricted, habit forming and expensive, but I think it's be better to start small and realistic.

A buddy told me about the Norinco embargo, so I checked out the Marstar site. I saw the Norinco M-14S, or even thier VZ-58S 7.62x39, or SKS type mausers but they seem to be out of stock an awful lot...

If any of you seasoned shooters could give me the grace of your advice,
any suggestions on models, or directions for me to start looking?

Non-restricted and semiauto? You have the Norinco M305 (M14 clone) for around $500 second-hand (you have to sign up to use our Equipment Exchange forum, lots of nice deals), there's the $200 SKS, $700 5.56 mm Mini-14, $1200 AR-108B, $1600 XCR, $2000 Springfield M1A and the $3000+ Swiss Arms rifles. 5.56 mm is abundant and relatively cheap (compared to 7.62 x 51 mm).

The Vz58 is 7.62x39 (there are restricted and non-restricted versions) and is in the $650 range, ammo is cheap ($200 for 1180). Check out the thread that's stickied at the top of the page

I'm going to agree with my fellow Victorian. I think a VZ-58 (also called a CZ-858) would be a perfect 1st awesome gun.
If you get a VZ-58, it will be restricted due to barrel length, but will be identical to what the Czech army uses.

If you want to shoot out in the bush and have more freedom, get the VZ-58S or CZ-858. They're non-restricted, by having a longer barrel.

I personally got a CZ-858 and I haven't looked back yet. Eventually you grow to love that stinky smell the czech corrosive ammo makes. ;)

Theres always the tactical non-restricted Benelli M4 semiautomatic shotty for around $2000. Great for any kind of load I hear.

after a lil experience and researcha nd being new to gun world...sks-no way never again i am trying to sell mine it is heavy, nit as accurate as my top pick......cz(vz) 858 is the pick it riocks, light, compact, nice recoil, good handl;ing and fast and furious feeds......i have tried semi auto 30-06 and no thanks....223 are fun but aftre shooting bolt action accuracy is best in bolt....but tactical fun 223 would be better tha cz i think for distance...maybe i am completely wrong but then againb i am fairly new......My choices as follows: cz 858 open sights #1....#2-270 for hunt bolt action......#3-223 bolt for small game and longer distance accuracy......12 gauge mossberg for homedefense and birds......my pse triton bow for silent kills(animals)....i gonna switch handgun from tokarev to a 357 revolver i think
