Hey, just ordering stuff to start reloading and I have a quite simple question.

What tool/die actually removes the old primer from a .223 brass case?

It is a pin that drops into a BOXER case and pokes the old primer out the single flash hole. Some military ammo will have three little crimps to hold the primer even more firmly in place. You'll need a little cutter gadget to cut those back first. Buy a couple of decapping pins when you get started. They are a little fragile and will break over time.

A BERDAN primer on the other hand will eat your pins for snack, lunch and supper. There are two small holes on opposing sides and no practical way to get the old primer out.

North American cases will be BOXER primed. Some cheap third-world imported military surplus ammo will be BERDAN primed. Commercial case will always be reloadable.

BERDAN long word - NOT RELOADABLE long words
BOXER short word - RELOADALBE short words.
