Hi, I'm new to firearms and have been looking at getting a SKS or a SVT-40. was wondering the difference bettween the different factories that made them are. Did they do anything different between them and is one factory better than the other? and also which gun do you prefer for tagert shooting and mabe a hunting rifle. thanks for your help.

For a beginner, I would recommend the SKS. It is simpler, cheaper and cheaper to shoot. I have both and love them both but if down to one, it would be the SVT. Just my opinion. As to factories, not much difference in quality. Especially as they are all refurbed anyway.

My first rifle was a SVT. I absolutely love it. I don't know a whole lot about the factories and the like, so someone else will have to answer that part. However when it comes to shooting/hunting, all I'll say is that the SKS ammo is cheaper and the SVT fires a round roughly equivalent to a .308.
If you plan to use it hunting, it rather depends on what you plan to hunt. If you plan to hunt Moose with it, the SVT has the knock down power you're looking for (and surplus ammo is approximately $0.30 a round depending on where you get it) if you hunting something smaller like deer, a SKS should be fine (I've never hunted deer, so I'm no expert) and the surplus ammo is quite a bit cheaper (maybe $0.15 a round? maybe, I've never bought the stuff so I'm not really sure).

If you plan to shoot a lot of bullets, the SKS recoil is quite bit less than the SVT. With respect to cleaning, the first couple times is going to be a pain regardless of which one you buy. But you get used to it after a while and it becomes no big deal.

Hopefully this gives you some useful information and helps you make you decision.
On a final note, I'd probably buy another SVT before I buy a SKS simply because there are a lot less SVTs out there, and most likely the price will only go up from where it is now.

Yup, read the stickies. A ton of great info there! I have both (several, actually). I might suggest the SKS if you can only get one... They're much easier to maintain, and ammo is a little cheaper.

If you're into such things SVTs do have the advantage of being a WW2 collectable....

Get both if you can, if you're anything like me you'll buy an sks and a week later you'll buy the svt. I love my svt, it's so raw when you shoot it, loud is an understatement. Recoil isn't that bad actually, for a large caliber rifle.

Lots of good info in the stickies for sure.

As Caliber Magazine said for the SVT-40, It shouldn't be looked at as a bigger alternative to the SKS. However, I would easily take my SVT-40 over my SKS. If you read up on the stickies about them and learn as much as you can before you buy one, It will make a great first rifle. You may even end up with a family of them.

No matter how cheap the ammo is you can not hunt with surplus ammo! It is FMJ and not suitable for humane kills and is usually specifically banned for hunting use

You can use fmj for hunting varmint such as coyote, wolf

From the Manitoba Guide

Cartridges
Cartridges having a full metal cased hard point bullet (including military-type cartridges such as Full Metal Cartridge, Full Metal Jacket and Total Metal Cartridge) may not be used by or be in the possession of a big game hunter

And yes Coyotes and Wolves are still considered big game animals
