Just recently got the offer to be a guinea pig for a dealer who wants to check out Styer's M9A1 pistol. Looking to shoot recreationally as well as IPSC.

Any info would be great.

Pros/ Cons?

Cheers,

what is holding you back? I had one, and it was the most naturally pointing pistol I have ever held, and the trapezoidal sights, although odd at first, were easy to get used to. Follow up shots were always on target. To date it has been the only pistol that I could hold a real reasonable sized group shooting with eyes close. Although not highly recommended. if you ever get the chance to hold your pistol on target with eyes open, close them and see how well you do shooting with your eyes closed, it gives you an enormous amount of feedback on your technique....if paying attention.....as well as your natural ability to hold the pistol on target. do this only when safe to do so obviously.

I sold the pistol as I never shot it or any others much. If I were competing it would be one I'd give a lot of consideration to.

I have one, my first ever firearm and I fell in love with it all over again last weekend. As dizzy said, very natural pointing and grip feel. Forces you to take a proper stance while acquiring and shooting. Low bore axis to hand fit means less muzzle flip and quick re-acquisition. And it looks dead ###y!

After shooting my new 1911 and M9A1 back to back, the Steyr just felt more natural, tighter groups when shooting quick. I know its not a fair comparison but the difference in grip angle is huge when pointing and holding on target. Tighter more locked in feel.

The cons for competition - tendency to fail to eject (FTE). I think it needs at least 1000 rounds break in and it seems to be ammo fussy. There are mods and fixes if you really want to use for competition, just check out the Styer Club - lots of help on there.

After having a hard time sourcing the latest gen in Canada, I'm now officially waiting for the L9-A1, which was announced a couple weeks ago. It has a 4,5" barrel so wont require custom fab for legalize, meaning availability should be much better (when it actually arrives).

Good gun but extremely picky on ammo. I had one that shot perfectly with federal AE but wouldn't run worth a damn with my reloads so it had to go.

Wow really? My M9 shoots way better with my reloads. Only had maybe 5 FTE over 900 reloaded rounds 115 Berry RN. Factory Federal 124gr I was getting 5 FTE per 300 or so.

Had three all of them rocked!
Then one of then the firing pin broke. The tip broke off.
I wrote steyr of austria they sent me a firing pin and spring in the mail.
I was pleased as a pig.
but the round count was in the hundreds so I sold them all.
Kinda sad loved them all, as the others report they are kinda awesome and under valued.

Awesome gun, mine eats anything and everything and really loves my 4.1gr unique loads. The FTE issues are an easy fix by adding a 1911 plunger spring in with the stock spring ... since the fix ive had 0 issues.

Samson23 Canada has bad representation for steyr so you wont find new gen steyrs or the L9a1 in canada anytime soon unfortunately.

?? Wolverine has them.
Availability is fine. Some dealers stock it or you just order it.

The distributor does not keep dozens in stock just in case.

Give us info on this just announced L9-A1.

I had a chance to put a few magazines through one a year ago. Probably one of the most ergonomic pistols (other than my P-99) that I have ever fired. Kinda homely looking though........

Availability is fine if you want old models upto 2008. The Canadian importer will not import new gen 2010 MA1's and I highly doubt they'll bring in LA1's. Took me a year of lOoking to find one without the LCI which happened to pop up used 1 day from Elwood's.

The 1911 Plunger spring fix is easy ... Remove extractor with a flat head screw driver ... Don't let the extractor spring fly away then slip the 1911 plunger spring inside the stock extractor spring ... put the springs back in there place and replace extractor. Some guys snip a bit off the plunger spring, I didn't. takes a couple mins to do. I'd suggest doing the procedure in a plastic bag until your comfortable doing it. Before adding the spring I could move the extractor with my finger now I can't ... 110% positive hold on cases now and no more oddball case to the forehead.

Looks a helluva lot nIcer than its cousin the block, but everyone's taste is different.

Something else owners might want to do is try the hogue handal grip, a little more added comfort, or there is a Sioux tools grip that also fits similar to the hogue ... I forget the part number atm though.

Also if your looking for a holster, blade tech makes 1 it's the IDPA model if I remember correctly.

I ordered one from SFRC on Wednesday. Hope to get it sometime this week. Ive been looking a videos and reviews, and found very minimal complaint with the M9-A1.

I was also wondering If anyone know if there is other Magazines than the Steyr that would work in the M9-A1? Or a place that sells extra mags. Can't seem to find any info on them.

No, Steyr mags and grips are unique. steeper grip angle.

Awesome thanks for the info! I did read alot of reviews about the FTE and they all said roughly the same thing.. 800-1000 break in and it virtually disappears!

Thanks again
