I've searched all of the forums and am wondering if I can get some personal opinions from people. I'm looking at getting a competition rifle...something that is good enough for a pro shooter and something that I can start out with and not need to upgrade later on. I'm looking for something in .22LR that can be accurate at about 150-200 yards. What would you guys recommend? I know $1k isn't much for a competition rifle but I'm sure it can get you a great gun.... -Joe

Check out Lilja's competition grade barrels for .22's. That on a Ruger 10/22 or 77/22 would be within you budget.

Look at the Savage or Stevens line up of rifles if you are looking for a center fire cartridge IE:223 may cost between 400 -700 $. If you are looking at a 22 Target rifle Sako and Tikka make excellent rifles but will cost around 1000 mark

If your looking for the best bang for your buck, try out the CZ452 Varmint 22LR. Most cases they sell for under $450 which would leave you about $550 for optics.
I am still amazed at the accuracy the rifle is capable of even at a 100mtrs. It has averaged just over .500" {Yes, whitnessed!!} with Federal Ultra Match and close to .750" with Eley Club Extra. Bedding is as it came from the factory and a Brooks trigger kit installed. Far from being a benchrest gun but close enough for me to be willing to place a wager or two on its accuracy.
Just my 2 cents worth !

The nice thing about the 10/22 is that there is so much after market stuff for it. You could have the rifle as a working -work in progress. You can essentially build the rifle over time, and have the advantage of shooting it as you go. Order a catalog from Brownells - they're free - or view their online catalog to get started. They also have a tech line to help you out.

Best base is going to be an Anschutz 64 or if you can a deal the 54. There are CIL rifles made by Anschutz that can also work well. The orig barrel may be all you need. You might want to also talk to Gaillard or Smith and see if they will make a match quality rimfire barrel. 18.5" is all you will need. If all else fails, lilja.

Walther also makes a superb rifle and there are a few from the silhouette classes floating around.

Personally, I don't think the Rugers are up to the task. Win 54, maybe a Rem 500 series, definitely the Bruno #4 and CZ equivalent but these would probably only be actions needing better barrels.

Look up info on BR50 for more info on this class of shooting. I have never heard of a Cdn comp using rimfires at that range. Can you give more details? Bench or Prone?

The 10/22 doesn't have a rating in the world for top shelf competition rimfires.
Not in the smallbore target shooting world, anyway.
Anschutz , Remington, Winchester 52, Vostok, Walther, etc, do.
And not just any models of theose firearms, but specific models.
