sub $200 .22lr semi autos able to handle hyper vel?

I have a Ruger 10/22 Target with bull barrel and is specifically states in the manual not to use stingers. It was well past the sub-$200. I'm guessing it has to do with the action can anybody else clarify - I'm worried to use the stingers in any of my .22s now.

My understanding is the problem with stinger relates to the specific type of chamber on your rifle. Target style chambers such as bentz are tighter to improve accuracy. Stingers are slightly larger in some of the external dimensions and can cause extraction and ejection issues with some of the tighter chambers.

I'm sure somebody who knows more will chime in, try a search in the rimfire section for stingers, I've seen this discussion come up a couple times.

The 10/22 is out for me at any price.I don't understand why they are so popular.I'm just after and occasional plinker and small game getter.I already own a .22wmr but .22lr is cheaper to have a day of fun with.I had a marlin 795 but sold it without ever firing it because the manual said no hyper velocity.Apparently it will crack the recoil buffer.

Well i don't know if it was bad for the rifle but i put about 200 through my marlin 795 one trip with no feed or extraction issues
i will let the experts fill you in on the engineering aspects

My 795 works just fine with stingers. If it breaks, I'll just buy a new one..

I didn't read the manual. I threw it in the garbage..

What do you want hyper velocity for? The only 22 I've had that it was accurate with was the SIG classic 22. All the rifles I've used it in had mediocre to poor accuracy. (CZ's won't even chamber without excessive downward force on the bolt handle, bullet is engaging the rifling. Heel further forward than most ammo??)

I happen to have quite a cache of .22 ammo and a good amount of it is hyper v.Might just grab a bolt action instead of a semi.

as stated, the stinger has a longer casing than a standard .22lr. that's why they tell you not to use them, not because of their epic power :)

they are still SAAMI spec ammo, and, if your rifle was made while that spec was in play, its tested with over SAAMI spec ammo.

Stingers I am not impressed with really, but Velocitors are awesome. Accurate and they don't drop as fast or as far as stingers due to their greater mass(40grn vs only 32grn) Plus they are the same length as regular .22lr.

I like mini mags best tho, as they are basically half the price of Velocitors.

I know it's not semi auto, but a $120 or less cooey model 60 would handle any ammo you want!!!!

Mine shoots stingers pretty good as well. Cant complain with any ammo I feed it.

When I had a sr22 I shot mostly stingers with no problems. Imho if it cant handle those then why bother. Its a 22lr it should be able to take all 22lr ammo unless its a match rifle.

Stingers are crap ammo anyway its really far to light to be useful except at short range. Good >38gr ammo will carry more energy downrange along with greater accuracy.

The 795 is easily the best of the cheap semi .22s, the Savage and Rem aren't in the same league for reliability. The Mossberg Plinkster isn't bad though.

The problem with the 597 is the magazines. If you have your dual bolt guide springs set correctly AND you get a good magazine it should be pretty reliable. But so many of the factory magazines are duds. The manufacturing tolerances on them are a joke. The 10/22 on the other hand has magazines that are so reliable it's almost a joke too. Except the jokes not on YOU!

Yes the standard 10/22's will handle Stingers just fine. I've used them with no problems at all. I know it's already been mentioned but the Stingers do have a longer case and it's not recommended to use them in a match barrel. I thought it had something to do with the longer brass damaging the chamber because a match barrel would have tighter tolerances in the chamber? Something like that anyway. It's not that you can't shoot them it may shoot them just fine but you could be damaging your target barrel. That's what I took from it anyway.

Anyway, I agree with everyone about Stingers not being that great. I've seen some tests at longer range where the minimags had more penetration! They may not be "hyper velocity" but they are 40gr. I just buy the CCI AR Tactical 22LR's myself. They are very similar in spec to the minimag (40gr copper platted 1,200 FPS) and they sell them in a box of 375 so it works out a little cheaper than the minimags. The Velocitors are also 40gr and just over 1,400 FPS. But once again it's expensive buying those 50 packs!
