Has anyone done any up. I don't know if the powders I have on hand would be suitable? I have IMR 3031, 4064, 4198 and Varget. I was thinking of using some 420 gr hardcast as a bullet.

I tried some 45-70 shotshells but was not too impressed with the pattern, so I'm thinking sub sonic would be the way to go for sniping some grouse during moose and deer seasons.

Any thoughts, links or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

HA

Trail boss is the quick and simple answerer to your quest.
Its not the only solutions but with trail boss having such large size flakes you wouldn’t need any fillers.
About 12 grains gets me 900fps with a 420 grain bullet in my 45-70.

here is data from the hdgdon website:
300 GR. CAST LFP IMR Trail Boss .458" 2.465" 14.0 1199 19,400 CUP 16.5 1285 20,900 CUP
385 GR. CAST LFP IMR Trail Boss .458" 2.505" 14.0 1075 19,400 CUP 16.0 1142 23,200 CUP
405 GR. CAST LFP IMR Trail Boss .458" 2.540" 12.0 971 24,500 CUP 13.0 1007 25,600 CUP
485 GR. CAST LFP IMR Trail Boss .458" 2.540" 8.0 699 17,100 CUP 10.0 804 23,300 CUP

Yup, Trail Boss, but I would go with a lighter cast bullet, only very tough birds require 420 grs. of lead.

They grow them big here in Ontario.:D I've heard reports of entire trucks be run off the road due them. lol They get fed a very healthy diet of Mcguilty####.

420's are what I have on hand other than some expensive jacketed bullets.

Try to find the thread that Camp Cook started a while back on the same subject. I was quite long (and controversial) if I remember right.

Just last week tried some 240 grn cast's in my 444. 16.6 grns of Trailboss with CCI 200 primers. Was getting 3/4" groups at 50 yds and avg speed of 1350fps. Not much faster than some of my .22 factory rounds.

The coolest part was squeezing the trigger and moments later hearing the round hit the target.

Get some Trailboss, it's peaked my interest in reloading quite a bit!!

Get some 50cal balls for muzzle loaders (very cheap)and size through a Lee push through .458 sizer(cheap). These will weigh +- 175gr. I've used 6gr of 700X, though almost any shotgun powder should prove suitable. Prime, charge and seat the ball with some lube wiped on it so the ball just protrudes over the mouth. The liquid alox sold by Phishroy(signed in above) is excellent for this and other cast bullets as well.(Very cheap, I bought 2 large bottles and have had +!!! results). The recoil and noise is about like shooting a 22 and accuracy is very good out to 25yds. Oh, by the way, this is a really cheap load.

Lots of good powders around for giving low speed to a 400, or 420 grain bullet.
22 grains of 4227, according to Lyman, gives 1200 fps. I have had good luck with this.
11 grains of Unique for 1050.
23 grains of 4198 for 1210.
20 grains of 2400 for 1175, and on and on.
There has been a lot of such threads lately, and the jury still seems to be out on backing the very low charges of powder. It is probably a good idea.
If you missed the other threads and want, probably the best backing there is, let me know.

I can't seem to find other threads related to this. When you refer to backing are you talking filler to take up case room?

Thanks

I'm not interested in something that extreme. 700-800 fps should be quiet enough. I seen the Hammond Gamegetter and was thinking a .495 roundball re-sized to .458 might make an interesting ca..... er ... I mean grouse killer.

Close to my experience... And the standard deviation was extremely low.

Have you tried my recipe, HA? PM me if you like and I can give you a more detailed breakdown. I've taken lots of game with my shells based on 45-90 brass.
