Now if you listen to any farmer they'll all tell you that they barely subsist no matter where they are in the world. I have found out that a PAL and hunting permit are free of charge if you are a subsistence farmer in Ontario. Is this still true and is the measure of the subsistence that you have no other income other than farming and eat what you grow and also hunt to eat?

I think that should read 'subsistence HUNTER', as that is what most of the applications say...
Thats the phrase! I kind of fancy that level of application.

To apply for a free PAL, there is a box to check on the form. You may well be asked to justify the claim. Its more or less automatic for some folks, like Inuit. There are some special hunting rules for farmers in Ontario, but I doubt if many folks of European ancestry qualify for subsistance hunting status.

This is the government publicity to address your question.

As for FARMERS, in Eastern Ontario there is a landowners' rights group that has publically engaged in whitetail deer culls. Very much bad according to the provincial wildlife officials.

'Those beautiful deer are for everyone to hunt during regular seasons, and you angry farmers should be grateful that the hunters from the city bring their money to your small towns 4 days a year.'

Prairie farmers have another approach. They're in the cattle business, not the deer business. Shoot excess deer with a .22 at dusk, let it die in the bush and the coyotes will do the rest. And Furchrisakes, don't tell anyone!

TimC....that won't cut it I'm afraid. You could try but I think your application will get shut down immediately. Who knows, if it worked maybe you could set a preceidence, then all of us beleaguered farmers and ranchers could get free PAL's when they come up for renewal. :) ;)

"sustenance" boys. Not substinance. :)

I suspect what province you live in will also play a role, and what your address is. People are more likely to buy the idea that someone living with a post office box in Alexis Creek, bc might be a sustenance hunter than someone living in toronto, ontario :)

Tried to check it out with a some of the local farmers here in Ontarariario.
No luck ... one's down at the SHOT Show in Vegas, the other two left early for Daytona Speedweek !!! Sustenance for sure. Another has to get back from Mexico in a few weeks to get the Maple Syrup action going to maintain his "farm" status !!!

I guess I'd be better settling in first and trying that approach when my PAL comes up for renewal!
At least I'll be able to use it as a business expense as my business will need firearms for tools.
