A passage from treaty six.

http://www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/pr/trts/trty6/trty6a_e.html

Her Majesty further agrees with Her said Indians that they, the said Indians, shall have right to pursue their avocations of hunting and fishing throughout the tract surrendered as hereinbefore described, subject to such regulations as may from time to time be made by Her Government of Her Dominion of Canada, and saving and excepting such tracts as may from time to time be required or taken up for settlement, mining, lumbering or other purposes by Her said Government of the Dominion of Canada, or by any of the subjects thereof duly authorized therefor by the said Government.

Pay attention to the statement

"subject to such regulations as may from time to time be made by Her Government of Her Dominion of Canada"

In other words, there is a provision in this treaty to regulate the hunting of the natives covered by this treaty without violating the terms of the treaty.

Stubblejumper,
If more people took the few minutes to read the treaties that applied to their areas most of the "treaty entitlements" would disappear amid public outrage. We've been lied to for so long, that a couple pages of plain English got twisted into something that never was.
We read these things in elementary school, but the practice doesn't seem to be widespread. Too bad, really.
