Hi guys.

Had a good bear hunt on Sunday. I have been really trying to get my girlfriend on a good bear. We seen 6 in total. Seen a sow and 2 Cubs. Watched them for a while. Had another 2 lone bears but could not get a shot in the thick bush. We took a break at a lake and had some lunch. That evening we headed out to continue the hunt. We came across another bear. It vanished into the tree line.

We hiked up to it. I go one way and Megan goes the other. Like I said the bush was very thick. Also where the bear headed in was very steep. I look over to Megan to say "can you see anything" I see the rifle is shoulderd and before the words came out of my mouth she squeezed one off.

I hear crashing and thrashing. I said "did you get him". Didn't get much of a answer as she was focused and excited. Then we hear the "death moan".

Yep you smoked him.

Because I didn't see the shot and the bush was so thick I decided we would wait 10min before going in.

The hill was extremely steep. The entrance and exit holes showed the shooting angle. I had to crawl up he hill using my rifle as a walking stick.

Found the bear piled up 15yrds from where Megan said she shot it.

She made a perfect off hand shot and put it threw the lungs.

I was so proud of her.

This was her first big game animal. She helped skin and gut as well.

Rifle: savage axis youth
243win
100g partitions over IMR4350

Nice healthy bear measures 5'6".

Not getting it rugged. So I just gave her a quick lesson. And let her figure it out for her self. She did a fine job.

So nice to see something like this.
Wish you many years of hunting together.

Another thing i notice since i am in contact with some BC hunters that you guys use real hunting calibers not cannons like guys here in Ontario.(this is between my friends statistics)
I cant understand why someone need 375,9.3 or other cannons for shooting black bears and moose.
Just plain overexeguration

So because you can't handle the recoil no one else should use those calibers? Bigger is never a mistake, providing you can shoot it as well as the smaller calibers.

Good job and nice pics OP, congrats to her!

I can think of times that it helps, and none where it hurts. Can't say the same about going with the bare minimum.

I handle recoil just fine. I am not talking wheter i can or cant handle recoil but if you look at it they have about double or more game to hunt there than we here. For some reason they are comfortable with their "bare minimum " as it is considered here. Walking through bush as they do there with some 6 or 6.5 mm we need 375 or more to shoot from some tree stands 15 ft high. I dont say it dont help. Truck will always load more than minivan,we all know that. This is just observation not an insult to those who use large cal. And my question is why do we need that kind of power.
Again i way quoting this based on my friends needs not all of you cannon lovers there but obviously it is not just friends of mine.

To the gentlemen that assume i cant handle recoil i can only say that appropriate assumption would be that he is scared of big game and need large cal.to feel better.
Again it is not what i am saying but would be same if i did based on comment left.

I think you'd find that your caliber size assumption based between BC and ON hunters is quite incorrect. People who hunt in grizzly country tend to carry rifles that can take on a grizzly even though they're not hunting them.

So hunt with your 22LR, and be done with it... No need to knock what the others believe they are comfortable hunting with. All preference... :)

Daka, I know what you're saying and I would agree that they carry the larger caliber rifle for peace of mind or they 'justified/rationalized' buying a larger caliber rifle specifically for bear hunting.

I did not try to stir anything up, just wanted to hear some opinions and talk about something else than usuall stuff.
I also cant understand people who dont take any comments about something they have or use.
For sure everyone have their preference and no one is trying to force anyone to think different but why every conversation on these forums always lead wrong way!?
There is answers and opinions, personal issues should be left aside because they are spoiling chit chat we are trying to have.
