Successful Blood Track by my Drahthaar Nos.

Good job to you and nos, I sure could have used mine at deer camp this year, could have saved a day and a half searching.

At first I saw the huge hole in the deer's head and saw the thread title - assuming the deer ran a long way with that hole in its head. I was gonna say holy crap that is a badass doe. But then I read the story and was equally impressed by what really happened. I felt proud for your dog as I read it. That's amazing and it makes me feel like bringing one of my dogs next time for tracking. My boxer is ok, but my little jack is well behaved and he seems like a great candidate for tracking.

Funny, I just did an internet search on jack russells as trackers and they seem to be the underdog of tracking, lots of success stories. DEFINITELY taking mine next year.

Thanks guys! I still remember this like it was yesterday!

FYI, this is the first year that blood tracking (outside of rifle season) with your dog, is legal!!! This will result in much better recovery rates for wounded big game animals in Ontario!

Cheers
Jay
P.S. I used to only be legal during rifle season... So glad it's changed to allow it during the entire big game season!!!

Is a special license or anything required for a dog accompanying a hunter?

I wish our SRD/F&W divisions would get over the ages-old East vs. West mindset about hunting big game with dogs. It is forbidden here to 'be accompanied by a dog while hunting big game' (except for cougar during that season... they are run before hounds).

I believe that running deer with dogs would never catch on in the West for long-standing reasons, but we should be able to track a shot animal with a dog.

(4) Despite subsections (2) and (3), in any part of Ontario described in subsection (5), a person may use a dog to search for an elk, moose or deer that has already been lawfully wounded in the hunt if,
(a) a licence has been issued in respect of the dog for the purpose of hunting;
(b) the dog is kept on a leash that has a maximum length of 10 metres; and
(c) the dog is under the physical control of the person. O. Reg. 171/13, s. 4.
(5) Subsection (4) applies in the following parts of Ontario:
1. With respect to the hunting of elk, any part of Ontario in which a person may hunt elk under the Act.
2. With respect to the hunting of deer or moose, an area described in subsection (3). O. Reg. 171/13, s. 4.
87. A resident shall not hunt raccoon at night unless accompanied by a dog licensed for that purpose. O. Reg. 665/98,

Agreed! And, in Germany you MUST have access to a trained hunting dog for blood tracking in order to hunt! It only makes sense!!!

Does anyone know if you can use a dog to track deer in wmu 86 in Ontario ?

YES IT'S LEGAL as of this year, see below. Previously, it was only legal during the rifle season, it is now legal throughout the big game season.

Cheers
Jay

thanks Jay for the replay, eventhough you just made picking my next dog that much harder. Now i need to add tracking on top of upland and duck. Sure would be nice to have the option and make recovery that much more likely

GREAT story. I have a pudelpointer and he is supposed to do the same but has not had a chance yet. In Europe it is compulsory to have a deer tracking dog. It is fairly stupid of our game dept's to not allow them in some provs. Once again "great tale" and give dog an extra pat.

Very nice! Around here dogs have to be on a leash for ungulates but can be off leash for bears and cats.

My dogs aren't hunting dogs, but they are extremely fast at finding downed game, I think they actually use the body scent of the animal though. Their senses are amazing, I've seen them smell coyotes from nearly half a mile and dig up decades old bones.

That's ALWAYS my favourite part of the hunt. Watching and hearing the dogs work. Whether we're pushing with them or using them to track. My beagle brought my first moose and my first deer right to me. Now he's old and fat, and due to getting hit by a truck last winter his hips aren't up to it. Still gives the odd cottontail a run for his money though.
