such thing as an inexpensive gun belt?

I have the Uncle Mike`s duty belt 2 piece unit.
I am lucky, my belts are provided through my job, but I would puchase them if I needed to.
It is a smaller velro fastened inner belt and the wider 3 point delryn buckled outer belt.
I like it because I can unhook the entire belt with all my mag holders and holster attached and put it away when I am not on the course (lunch, between squads, going to bathroom etc.).
The only detractor is that the outer belt is very wide - 2 inches. Can be a problem finding accessories to fit.

You're allowed to carry holstered at your range without being black badge qualified?

Yes I know its hard to believe, but some ranges treat their members like adults and allow such "unskilled/trained/qualified" people to carry their guns around the range without the uber necessary black badge training.

Black badge...just an IPSC thing isn't it?

Why would a range require somebody to do IPSC courses to holster a gun? What if you only do IDPA? What if you only do PPC? What if you don't compete at all, and just want a safe way to retain your gun while changing targets?

I have never understood people's obsession with that course.

Agreed!!!!

Around the range but I want to get into ipsc eventually

Around the range any of the suggested would work just fine. My range and IDPA belt is a stiff leather "gunbelt" sold as an entry level cowboy belt.

If IPSC is your goal a 2 piece velcro type is the way to go. I use CR Speed and have 4 of them setup for various firearms. They have all been purchased used off the EE for reasonable prices. CR Speed makes a good belt as does Double Alpha.

I just bought 2 belts from DS Tactical:

5.11 Tactical Double duty TDU Belt with the plastic buckle 1.5" wide
5.11 Trainer Belt with the metal buckle 1.5" wide

They're both thick and super durable. I use the Trainer belt as my every belt and it's holding up quite well. If you're looking for something affordable, go for the first one with the plastic buckle ($23.99).
