So we have a dog(7 week old pup). Long story short son's male is the smartest dog I've ever come across, and without a paragraph this pup appears smarter, so we have a dog.

Quick internet search shows a whole lot of not much.

Reading advice concerning training for upland much appreciated.

Father is black lab/gsp cross, mother is gsp/springer spaniel cross.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I ordered a dvd set for my dog. Worked awesome, she is a lab and is trained up for both upland and getting ducks out of the ponds.

I just watched a few steps a few times then we went out and practiced for a week or two until she had it down. Then went to the next step.

I don't know about on line, but I could suggest the two following books.

The Hunting Dog Training Bible by Andy Howell,
I found this one in a used book store.

Game Dog: The Hunter's Retriever for Upland Birds and Waterfowl-A Concise New Training Method
by Richard A. Wolters
.
This one I bought on Amazon. I assume it is still available.

Good luck and enjoy:)

Youtube is probably a better bet. It's one thing to read about training a dog ( and I love books ) it's another to see a pro do it and makes it easier to understand what they mean. There is hoards of stuff on training an upland dog. Everything from puppy life to finished dogs. I watch Standing Stone Kennels which has a youtube channel that covers just about everything. The issue with youtube is there will also be a lot of crap. You will probably be able to find something that fits your hunting expectations and your personal style of training a dog

Well it is going to highly depend on which DNA is dominant... you have a dog that is half flushing Retriever and half Pointer. If you go the flushing dog route, I would recommend James Spencer's book "Training Spaniels and Retrievers." If your dog has a penchant for pointing, then contact the local kennel club, there is usually and pointing dog division that get together for training and trialing... they will get you sorted out.

Both parents point with no training. Mother is def the bird dog of the two, but the male is much smarter. The mother is a, "pretty dog" but the better hunter and bird Crazy. Pup resembles mother but will be built like father.

Honestly I'm lost with this, so looking to read/watch everything I can to sort it out both for my interest/enjoyment and hers. I figure if I can work out what, "works", we'll make it, work, however it works out. Thanks.

One thing I have found is when you get to the point in training to use firearms begin with a pellet gun then progress to a .22 and so on. Nothing worse than a good hunter that is gun shy.

Indeed, In fact, one of those books has a really good chapter on that subject.

Suka, Enjoy training your dog, it could be a lot of fun and really creates cool bound between you and your dog.

This is my latest pooch. This picture was taken when she was 1-1/2. She is three now.

Find a NAVHDA training group in your area, they train for pointing, retrieving on land and water, tracking and obedience. I went that route with my two Weimaraners and they are wonderful dogs to hunt over. Good luck!
