So with the insanity around the price of reloading components my attention is drifting back to rimfire where a shooter can plink away without needing a second mortgage. Can you folks give me a suggestion of a few bolt actions out there capable of decent accuracy out to 100 yards or maybe even a wee bit further.

I would like something to plink away off the bench and see just how small a target I can hit consistently.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

$200 can get you one with reasonable accuracy out to 100 yard.
$20000 can also get you one with nice feeling and accuracy.
Between them, there are tons of options.
You are good to go.

If accuracy is what you want, meaning after sighting the rifle in and the bullet hits what you aim at then all the rifles out on the market both new, used, old models or new models will satisfy you based on your budget.

But if precision, the smallest group possible with decent match ammo than you're about to jump into the 22lr rabbit hole.

I'm a CZ fan so I'll always vote for the 457. Both accurate and precise out of the box and lots of aftermarket support. Lots of 457 related parts over at the EE. I like the typical 22lr magazine, I can carry quite a few 10 round magazines in my pocket without making my hips look to fat and they're cheap compared to the other rimfires that utilizes the Rem700 foot print.

You can easily plink pocket change at 100m at least 50% of the time with a fairly cheap rifle shooting good ammo.

No matter how much you spend, rimfire is going to be determined by the quality of the ammo, and even top tier rimfire ammo is pretty crap compared to cheap centerfire handloads. But if you want to ring gongs and slaughter pop cans .22 is the way to go.

Get a Savage MII heavy barrel and some standard velocity ammo and be happy.. You can spend double or triple and not gain much if anything. Spending the big $$$ makes marginal gains unless you are just shooting benchrest.

If you want to spend more the next rifles I would consider would be a CZ457 MTR or Anschutz 64 MS-R/MPR. The CZ has loads of upgrades available, the Anschutz has little to nothing.

Really good suggestions here; very few suggesting used.
Any of the classic Brno/CZ rifles from the 1950s up to present; Tika, Anschutz etc. Heavy barrel or light barrel depending on what you want it for and how you are going to use it. Accessories are cool, but rarely make a gun more accurate, but can make them more usable.

I'v been shooting .22 for over 50 years and have owned and shot a lot of different rifles. Accuracy means more to me than looking cool or dumping mags at a high rate of fire (although that can be fun too)

Currently, I have an old Cooey 85, a CIL Anschutz 180, a CZ 452, and a Brno Model 4. All are crazy accurate. All have their place. The CIL and the BRNO were basket cases when I got them (the Brno is still a work in progress, but I am shooting it pending some details.

Maybe he's just dipping into rimfire ? Agree, after that many years he should know a bit . . . I have friends that never shoot rimfire and many that don't shoot rifles at all, just sg.

Powdergun has a rating of 238 but after starting this thread . . . disappears.
It would appear he should know his way around.

Sorry didn't disappear. Some very nice folks have offered great advice via the PM's. As for what seems to fit the bill from the advice I have it narrowed to the CZ Varmint or a Tikka. Also thanks for the info regarding ammo as well. Other than burning ammo with my ruger 10/22 I have not looked into rimfire much. My thing is center fire bolts but considering reloading costs now it may be time to learn. But I do know one or two things about shooting lol..

Starting a long cold winter here so just making plans for the spring thaw.
