Can you guys please give me your suggestions for my first rifle? I prefer a .22 LR that costs less than $300. I was at a couple of gun stores and they refered me to a savage Mark II. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. (PAL should be arriving in the mail any day this week!!)

First rifle

The suggestion of a Savage as your first rifle is good advice. It's a bolt action with a clip not a semi auto and. That way you can shoot longer with 50 rounds. It provides you with time to perfect your shooting and safety skills. There are good used Lakefields, and Savages out there for around $125 and I haven't heard of any with problems. Buy your first gun as a bolt gun and if you want a semi get a Ruger 10/22. If you want accuracy then think about accurizing the 10/22 or buying a good accurate single shot. There are lots of them on GNZ so take your time and don't rush out and buy the first new gun you see. If you get the chance to try other guys guns find a gun that fits then go on a search for that gun, but be patient. There are lots to choose from so don't be in a rush. The one thing about getting something that you want is to watch for the guy that has to have everything now. He will buy high, and when he changes directions and interests change, then he sells low.

Mk II is a good choice, nothing wrong with it. In case you don't know, semi-auto .22s get filthy real fast; the action in a bolt gun stays clean almost indefinitely.

Savage MkII gets my vote. Bolt action with clip and pretty damned accurate. This one will last yoy a lifetime:D

For that budget you can get yourself a pretty nice .22 especially if you go with used stuff. I agree that a bolt action rifle is a good way to go for a first rifle. Nothing wrong with the Savage if you want a new one. Made in Canada too. :)

Ya of course I'm gonna say "yes" to Savage but we can't leave out the Cooeys either. Hey, they were made in Canada to.

And to top it off your gonna hear the biggest Savage fanatic on this site say that the Cooey iron sights are more accurate than the Savages but I'd scope it anyways.
