Suggestions for a gun vise.

Hi everyone. I need your advice on choosing a good retaining system (gun-vise) for working on long guns. After a few year`s apprenticeship I'm buying my mentor's gunsmithing shop and setting it up at my place over the next couple of months. The shop's inventory includes smaller vises to work on hand guns but nothing great for rifles or shotguns. Can anyone suggest something professionnal or at least sturdy?

Since 1967 I have been using 5 and 6 inch metal vises with various homemade soft jaws for holding stocks and firearms. They are big and more than study enough but that is good. A gun shop needs a large metal vise. Much more useful than the cleaning gadgets marketed...
 
Yep, a regular 4 to 6 inch vise with padded jaws is all you need. Said pads can be easily made out of leather. 8 to 12 oz. Tandy's sells it.
 
A six or even eight inch vise. Buy the biggest quality vise you can afford, and mount it solidly to a sturdy bench well-anchored to both the floor and wall. Plywood sacrificial jaw protectors faced with sheet cork & leather are indispensable.
 
Best jaws I have used are 1/2" felt, they last forever (I have never replaced mine) and have never left a mark. A wood working vise can be very useful as well but if only one go for a machinist vise. I have lots of sizes but I always come back to a 4" swivel for all around use. I use the swivel a lot and a bigger vise is just too big to move around a lot.
