I picked up a 98 Mauser based 375 made by Manufrance / Dumoulin.

It is worn but quite nice really. But - it has remnants of that black paint like coating material still in various areas - mag surfaces, under the front lug, bolt shroud, inner rails etc.

I can brass brush some of the loose stuff easily - but is there a solvent that works better without damaging the remaining bluing?

Wynns Air Intake Cleaner. Comes in a big red/white aerosol can. Eats off paint quickly and won't harm the bluing.

How about some pics? Sounds interesting.

The black rubbery paint on Russian refurbished rifles dissolves easily in methyl hydrate, ethanol (de-natured alcohol), and isopropyl alcohol. These are low odour and high flash point. I always use these before resorting to petroleum based solvents. These might work on your Mauser.
Alcohols dissolve shellac so be careful about spilling any on the stock
