... I've been asked to load some 300 Winchester Magnum rounds, got the manuals, dies and shell holder etc. What I need to know, is whats a good performing bullet for both accuracy and performance, to be suitable for Elk Hunting? I would assume something around the 180 grain Sierra "boat tail spitzer" @ 2700 fps. ? I have absolutly no personal experiance with the 300 Win.Mag. nor with Elk Hunting, so any pointers, appreciated !! Thanks in advance ! ... David K.

Have a look at the bullet manufacturers websites and get their recommendations. If you're only doing 180gr @ 2700 (30-06 territory) you have much to choose from. I like the Hornady interbond, great bullet and cheap too.

Bullet: Sierra 200 Grain Hollow Point Boat Tail
Powder: 71.7 grains of IMR-4831
Primer: Winchester WLR
Case: Winchester
Firearm: Ruger 77
Optics: Leupold 4x12AO
Velocity: 2986 FPS @ 15' from muzzle
Accuracy: 5-shot, 100-yard, <0.75"

Loads for 300 Win. Mag.

... Thanks Guys ! Now I've got some starting points ! I think up to now, he's been using factory 180 grns. which struck me as being a bit too light to get the max. benifit from the 300 WM.... thanks again ! ..... David K.

Hollow point for Elk hunting? Come on now, and <.75 with a Ruger? LOL kidding man but I am questioning the benefit of a h/p for a big game animal such as an elk, I am also surprised that there were no responses with the triple shock Barnes X. I just wrote this down on an order form and could use some feedback if anyone has info on them. Thanks.

Nosler Partition

180 gr. Nosler partion worked on elk , moose and black bear for me.

Can't remember the powder.

I load 'em with my buddy. I pay for the components and he has the gear.

Look for the standard recommended load in the manuals and the more experienced advice on here than I can give you.

I would opt for the 180 gr. Nosler Accubond over some H4831sc, RL22, or H1000, for 2900fps or so.

200 gr. Accubond is also an option, with the same powders, but for 2800 fps and change.

I have two good loads one target and this one I use for hunting:

180 gr Nosler Accubond
82 gr Hodgdons H1000
CCI 250 Primers
COL 3.520"
Vel. 2980 fps
5/8"-3/4" @ 200m

This load worked very well this year on moose and deer.

180 Partition
73.0 IMR4350
Federal 215
FC Brass
OAL - 3.340
MV - 3140
Group at 100 - 0.904"

Or a 168 TSX at 3050 -- 75.0 RL22 rest of the stuff was the same except the groups went to 0.650"

Although the Partition sounds like a better round, the TSX was a real death ray. My bullet of choice for moose and deer.

Well, I am going to suggest something different. I use 220gr Nosler Partition Semi-Spitzers. With 76.5gr of H1000, W-W brass and 215M primers I get a chronographed average of 2858fps out of a 24" barrel. This load is exceptionally effective on elk, moose, grizzly etc. out to 300 yards. Try it, you'll be pleasantly suprised. Work up to that load, I have gone to 77.0gr, but had pressure signs; start lower and work up.

barnes 180gr triple shock with 73.5 grs of imr4350, have found that they worked very well on moose and deer and i have recovered 3 of 4 bullets, perfect 4 petal expansion. also same powder load as above with 180 grand slams, or if you were looking for say a sheep load the 165gr grand slams with 74.5gr of imr4350, were a very stable and flat shooting load out of my sako. wre grouping at and inch and a quarter at 200 yrd.
