I bought this because it was inexpensive and I thought I could test some simple gunsmithing on it. I want to do a few things.

  • Add Weight To The Butt
  • Add Weight To The Forestock
  • Bed The Action

The stock is very light and its a .300 win mag. For adding weight I should tell you that I have zero experience but I thought I could mix lead shot with epoxy and just let it set in the butt stock and the forestock. The forestock is a little different because it has a wafer type configuration where I have indicated. From the top view its like looking at small pieces of pie interlaced.

As for the green part it highlights the plastic magazine housing that sits against the action. Can this still be bedded?

I just made a suggestion that I thought might be easy for adding weight, but I am really looking for advice. Let me know what you think.

Why would you buy a gun that is specifically designed to be light, just to add weight to it?

I'm a little biased because I hate those guns. But seriously...... sell that to some sucker and get yourself a Savage/Stevens.

I had one in 30-06 and I let it go. I liked it despite the criticism it has gotten. I know it is designed to be light but it is a little too light. In addition I just wanted something to practice on. I got it for a very good deal. Far cheaper than a used stevens. So if any of you guys have some suggestions on adding weight or bedding the action please add them.

Thanks,

Follow Rembo's advise. Sell it to someone stupid before it blows up in your face.

If youwant to try some gunsmithing I would get a old 303 or something and work on that.

you could bed the action. you could also spend more money on the gun and put it into a laminate stock which would also increase the weight.

you could take the stock and add some epoxy and lead shot into the forearm and lead weight into the butt stock to also add some weight, fit a decent recoil pad , spend more money and have a muzzle brake fitted or spin off the factory barrel and install a heavy barrel to add weight and reduce recoil.

end result is that you have rifle that apparently is not highly desirable, has not had a proven track record and the likely reason that you got the steal price on it in the first place is that no matter what you do to it, you are not likely to get your money out of it when you are done.

but hey, like i tell most guys if it will make you happy and that is what you want to do with your property, it is only money. have at it and maybe learn a few tricks. maybe you have less invested in this than what some of the old 303's sell for anyways.

post some details of your end result when you are done. :D

Epoxy on lead shot will add quite a bit of weight. Can you get off the grip cap. If hollow, you can add more weight in the grip which will help keep the balance.

I am sure conventional bedding locations will work.

Good luck and let us know how it worked out.

I will post the end result, I appreciate the advice. I think your right about perhaps not getting my money back. I will go one step at a time. I will just add weight and try to bed the current stock. If it performs better than expected I might add a heavy barrel or different stock, like you suggested

Thanks Jerry. So do you think the fact that the plastic magazine housing is removable does not matter when bedding?
