Hey guys,
I'm currently searching for a muzzle brake to be part of my precision 308 bolt action build.
It will be going on a barrel that is 1.25" at the muzzle so I am looking for something that will be flush with the muzzle. I do some prone shooting as well so it will need to be a brake that won't spit dirt in my face.
Any suggestions?

At 1.250", I think you might be looking at a custom ported brake.

Maybe Andrew will let us know the OD on the Heathen as I have not measured mine, could tonight. I'd guess around 1.125?

You could definitely have one made out of straight stock. I'm sure Insite or Alberta Tactical would be up to the challenge

Edit: Quick search shows Holland's and Schuler's offer brakes at 1.25". Must be something floating around

A friend of mine has one on his Tikka T3 Lite in 338 Win Mag, it definitely works. I thought that light *** rifle was going to beat me up but it was less kick than my 7mm.

I'm pretty sure you could use anything you wanted since the weight of that barrel is going to tame a lot of recoil on it's own

I wonder if the heathens 338 version would be wider? If so have them bore it for a 308 instead of 338?

I too am really excited about the Heathen muzzle brake from Insite. Before I talked to Harley and Andy at Insite I was sold on getting an APA Fat Bastard brake, as the recoil tests done on online show that they have the best recoil reduction, but what I did not take into account was the sound wave and the dust and how much that also bothers you after shooting for an hour or two. I looked at all the tests and read tons of reviews and in the end, the Insite one seems to take the best ideas and put them all into one brake. Big bonus it is right in my back yard in AB here too!
The Insite guys are spinning up 2 different caliber barrels for me right now, (a .300 Norma Mag and a 6mm slr) and will get the full size and medium size on them, and looking forward to testing them out against the ones I already own. As another plus the guys at Insite told me if I wasn't 100% satisfied with it, they'd take it back, no questions asked, how great is that, and nothing to lose.
From what I have come to realize is that the angle of the ports direct the gases and impulse to the side or back, and the angle gills beat the shooter up, even while reducing the recoil. The Heathen gills are at 90 degrees to the barrel and shoot the impulse to the sides, maybe not so great for guys shooting with you, but definitely much easier on the shooter, especially for you if you are going to be doing precision stuff.
Hope that helps...

The Heathen in 0.996" body diameter
We have done the design for a 1.096 and it is an option.
The locking nut is slightly larger so take that into account as well
