Hey everybody.

I am looking to get into shooting Target Rifle (TR).

Just wondering what type of rifle, iron sights, etc people are using and what would be a good starter gun.

I am thinking of getting a .223 but other than that nothing is decided.

If your just starting TR, you should look for a used TR rifle in 223 first, who cares what action it has really(even a Sportco or Musgrave would get ya started), just to see if you like the game. Also, most PRA's have "club" rifles that you can use along with free ammo (old issued stuff from someone's basement) to "sling-up" and try it out. I'm pretty sure I seen a Sportco for sale in the SPRA message board at the clubhouse.

Talk to Bob Pitcairn in BC, he should be able to help you get started in TR.

In case you didn't know, the Frosty Farky end of Sept in Kamloops has a TR division. Usually about 1/3 the shooters are in jackets so there are a number to offer advice and tips and shoot against.

Mark Anderson at the Powder Keg is very involved with TR through his wife's shooting.

There are some really great shooters at this match. A fast twist 223 pushing 80gr Bergers or AMax would be a great combo. Distance is 300m which makes life easier at the beginning. Can get some real nasty winds though.

A fun match with great shooters and competition. Hope you can make it.

I can only guess that the BCRA shooting in Chilliwack will also have TR shooters. There is a match at Volkes this weekend and a huge one Aug long weekend. I am sure you will find lots of info and help there.

If you want to go dirt cheap, you can get a Savage HB varmint rifle like the Low Profile (lam stock), mount a handstop/sling gizmo, turn the barrel for whatever open sight you want (see Sinclair Int'l for examples) and mount the rear sight on a weaver base. Should be accurate enough to hold the X ring at Kamloops.

Seen various open sights from Centra and Anschutz at gun shows for dirt cheap.

You might find a used match rifle for same/less but this is an alternative.

You are allowed to use a 4x scope on a TR rifle. I use an old K4 Weaver on mine. A heck of a lot cheaper than iron sights. I like it better just because the larger field of view makes it less likely (though not impossible) that I will crossfire. I like the 308 but the 223 is probably the better choice. Easier to shoot. Regards, Bill.

"...no problem with a used rifle..." That's good thinking. It really takes a lot of abuse to damage a modern rifle.
"...allowed to use a 4x scope on a TR rifle..." Puts you into the TR-O class. Same rifle otherwise.

TR-O is long gone at the DCRA. The use of a 4X scope is allow for the time being in TR, however I don't think the scores are allowed in the Bisley Agg.

And he's a real nice fella, too. He's putting a 15MOA scope base on my .308 for me. I only wish he was online. :(
