Suggestions on an optic for 3 Gun

After a few years, I'm still happy with my Bushnell Elite Tactical 1-6.5x.

Handled 500-600y shots no problem when I was in New Mexico. And its pretty good value right now, when I bought mine it was selling for around $1400. I think I recall seeing them for sale around 6-8 months ago for around $800.

I got mine in SFP with the BTR-1 reticle

The one complaint I've heard which I can understand is that it has a somewhat tight eyebox....I adjusted to this pretty quickly but it is something to keep in mind when comparing.

Alternatively, I've heard many great things about the Vortex Razor HD Gen 2. I don't think it was available when I bought mine, because I think I would have gotten it instead. It's pretty close to the benchmark scope which is the Swarovski

It depends on their eyesight, distances involved and, in some cases, what division your optic choice will put you in. Going with the "most used" optic May not be the right choice for you.

I used to run a RDS, as I've gotten older Ive switched to a variable power scope. My 16 year old son has no issues running a RDS.

You need to try out different options, figure out what you like best, and then work within your budget.
 
My first year of 3 gun I ran a vortex viper pst 1-4, I only used it on 1power so as to stay out of open class. The following year I switched to a red dot and found it was quicker even out to 2-300 yards if I knew my holdovers. Depending on your budget and what class you want to shoot in will be determining factors in optic choice. If you want to shoot open and regularly have targets out past 300 a variable magnified 1-4 or 1-6 would be a good choice, if you want to stay in standard and don't get to shoot past 100 very often a red dot will be a better choice.
The bushnell Onagoth posted would be a good choice as would a vortex viper pst 1-4 or vortex strike eagle 1-6. For red dots it's hard to beat a aim point H1 or T1.
 
Be a man.. Shoot irons.

The money you don't spend on an optic can then be spent on other manly things... 'Like flannel and moustache wax.

I've seen some amazing shots made on the clock by old guys shooting irons...
At all the 3gun matches I go to we all shoot the same targets regardless of division and... There are guys who can nail those distant targets using irons BETTER than many of us using glass.
 
Shot on the same squad as the guy who won heavy metal irons at Rocky Mountain once. Incredible accuracy with irons out to 600 yards that match.
 
really depends on your budget i started with a Burris tac30 1-4x (good quality for the price) if you want to get better but stay under 1k i would look at Vortex strike eagle 1-6x
 
Thanks for all the excellent suggestions. With my ageing eyes, looks like I'll be going for some form of magnification.

One more question............. any suggestions on good internet resources for information on 3 Gun in Canada. (Rules, Divisions, Equipment, etc)

There is no monolithic 3 gun organization in Canada. You'll find nearly as many sets of rules as you will find clubs shooting it.

Contact your local 3 gun group, or whoever you intend to shoot it with, and find out what their rules look like. Many groups will have a website or Facebook page.

This is the best advice for this question. If your only going to shoot local events. Go out and see what they do and help out with setting up and stuff. People will let you check out their gear. Shooters love talking about their gats. You may notice an el cheapo red dot may fit you fine.

Another big piece of advice, don't wait until you think you have the latest greatest gear. Go out with what you have and maybe bring some ammo for guns you don't have and people will help you out. Trust me just go.
 
boomershooter forums is where all the 3 gun nation guys hang out. The swavorski z6i is for rich guys and the trijicon tr 24 is for the good guys lol :)

I actually looked at an MTAC today for the first time and thought they were pretty good too! They guy behind the counter said he loved it far more than the Vortex Strike Eagle
