Suggestions please for lightening my rifle

Hey everyone, I just picked up a Remington 700 CDL Boone and Crocket in 7mm-08 and I would like to lighten it up a bit. I scoped it with a Vortex 2.5-10X50, aluminum weaver bases and rings, currently it weighs 9.1 pounds. The scope is only temporary and it weighs over 19 ounces, I plan to re-scope it with a Vortex 3-9X40 that weighs 14 ounces, so that will save 5 ounces, and I would also change the bases and rings if there are significantly lighter options out there. I am also wondering about the rifle itself, it wears a laminated stock that I like but I imagine alot of weight comes from that. Now I would like to keep the stock on the rifle, but is there any way to lighten it up a bit? I see Boyds sells a laminated stock with wood removed from the barrel channel area and possibly from the butt stock under the recoil pad to lighten it up a bit. Is this possible with a factory stock?

Any suggestions for bases/rings and possible stock modifications would be appreciated!

:)

You could also get lighter in the loafers, but that would only make the rifle heavier. 2X on the gym membership...........

Okay, okay guys...I get it! I'm fat and overweight and out of shape. :p

I know I will never turn this into a super fly weight rifle and that is not my goal. I am hoping to save weight on the scope and mounting system, and I am also hoping to shave a few ounces off the stock by removing wood from the barrel channel and maybe drilling the butt stock out a bit too.

Thanks for the ideas!:D

Is that the same thing as a patrol sling? I don't have slings on my rifles b/c they get in the way and I've never shot anything with my rifle on my shoulder. A patrol sling allows you to carry your rifle ready to fire, but the sling takes the load. Would be good if you're putting on a lot of miles. Still gets in the way IMO.

Crashman....I encountered the same problem with a Weatherby Vanguard as you have, posted the same/similar question you did and received the same
"smart" replies.
I work out 3 days a week in the gym, am healthier than a horse, have muscles in my poop and I've yet to see any rifle of mine lose weight because of that.
My lightest hunting rig weighs less than 6 lbs and my biggest target rifles are 35lbs and 20 lbs respectively and all the gym time in the world isn't gonna change them a darn bit.
Probably your best suggestions will come from the gunsmith's keyboards....:D

I guess one could get the router out and...

Yah it's a slow Saturday for me. :D

Calum...thats too cool, but I knew of a chap about 20-odd years ago that did the same to an '03 Springfield except his cut-out was a bit larger so when he fired it the first time the stock split and he had to get stitches where the Weaver scope bit him...

I wouldn't do anything to that rifle, too nice as it is. Just go with a lighter scope and talley rings, done.
X2

Exactly....throw a Leo Ultra 3-9x33 with one pice Talleys... My 260ti wears these and together(that's scope and mounts) they come in right on at 11 ounces;)

This will save you well over 1/2 lb vs your existing setup, look way better then a 50mm bell and you don't have to cut up a Beatiful Rifle IMO:cool:
