I was talking to a customer about a local barn owner that is being sued by his borders because he refuses to eliminate the rabbits that are making holes in his paddocks when he told me he had a coyote problem. He said that in broad daylight while he and his son were watching a fawn in the meadow having a much a coyote attacked and killed it in plain sight. So he asked me if I could help. SO my question gents ( and ladies ) is what tactics should I employ in the summer months? In winter I would get a lamb carcase and spike it to the ground and check on it in the early am and at dusk. ( I also employed a motion light that the coyotes and raccoons got used to real quick ) Do I use a call? Bait pile? what suggests ye?

Any dying animal sound should work especially if they have not been targeted before..... Get in there quietly, watch/play the wind, sit up against a fence line and start screaming.....

I use a challange howl then pup distress calls. I find woodpecker distress calls work. In the summer the pups are dumb and come right in. If you can shoot the adult the pups will keep coming back in

shoot the rabbits
leave the rabbits
shoot more rabbits and ground squirells
leave the rabbits
shoot the rabbits
leave the rabbits
shoot the rabbits and from a hide shoot the coyotes

Since it appears the coyotes are eating fawns......maybe a "fawn in distress" call should be a consideration.

That's where I would start. Then on to the coyote vocals.

Good luck

Agree They work very well this time of year
Best have a good shotgun and some 4 buck since they come in close and fast
Cheers

I got 5 while coyote hunting this may. With the mosquitios ticks and tall crops and thick overgrowth i rarely get out in the summer months. However a hay field freshly cut is prime hunting grounds. Sit on the inner side of a shadow with a backdrop. Their eyes take a half second tobadjust from bright sun to a shadow. Gives you that extra moment to raise the gun. They generally hang out in cooler thick swamps and ravines in my area. I get to a field edge or fence row downwind of them and use natural cover and or a ghille suit. Find the direction your sure theyll going to come from and face a different direction. Sneaky dogs always pop out where least expected

I plan to try the fawn distress call in a few days, been sick as a dog so not feeling like venturing out as of yet! I would normally bait them with some butchers cast offs but this property is pristine and I have no doubt the owner will have something to say about it. I will also have to talk with the neighbors as well so they do not freak out from the gunfire! Many thanks to all for the excellent suggestions!
