I never tried Cowboy action and wanted to give it a shot. Would I be able to use a Super blackhawk for some of the events?

Just have respect for your shooting partners, the T. O. and the cowboy targets, don't use full house mag loads. They blast the sh t out of everything. Hand load down to 800 fps or less.

I know some get their kicks from blasting and if you must you must. Most Cowboys don't say much about it but if your a T.O. and the stage is an enclosed area, that constant muzzle blast can get old real fast.

SASS rules, which most Cowboy Action Clubs pay lip service too, limit the muzzle velocities to 1,000 fps maximum for pistols and 1,400 fps maximum for rifles. In cowboy action there is no requirement to be capable of knocking down a charging rhino at 7 yds, if you can find a nice handload that will give you minimal recoil and an MV of 700 fps, your set. Using excessive powered ammunition is an easy way to get thrown out of a match.

The adjustable rear sight on the Super-Blackhawk does not lend itself well to fanning the hammer quickly.

The Vaquero style Ruger pistols don't have that protruding rear sight.

You might want to have a look at both styles, before laying your money down.

You're forgetting the most important part! The lost accuracy do to excess recoil!!!

I have a pair of 5.5" SBHs that I have been using along with a Marlin 1894SS for CAS/SASS. The SBHs are heavy but with large hands I found they are easier for me to handle than the smaller 38/357 revolvers.

44 magnum is hardly an authentic cowboy caliber but it is allowed under SASS rules.

As mentioned previously do not use full power hunting or defense loads for this game. I am running 6.0 grains of Trail Boss with 240 grain lead bullets, it is a very light load for 44 but shoots well in the rifle and the revolvers.

I was planning on using 44 special in it for CAS so no worries of being "THAT GUY :p"

Just want to make sure I would be allowed to even use it in the shoot :)

Not a problem. totally CAS/SASS approved. The only thing you can't do with an adjustable sighted revolver is shoot in the Gunfighter, or duelist categorys. They are accepted in any of the "age" based categorys. Have fun

My wife has started shooting with me. she shoots 44special in my superblackhawk and LOVES(her word, not mine) to shoot .45 colt in my ruger old army. low recoil and accurate rounds.

I've been shooting .44 Mags using 5.1 grains of W231 punching a 240 LRNFP bullet through my 2x Vaqueros and Marlin M1894S for 15 years now, it works.

Do you reload your .44Mag? If you don't then you should bloody well begin doing so. Shooting any handgun that starts with a four with nothing but factory ammo is a good way to push yourself into the poorhouse! ! ! !

And assuming you ARE reloading then simply load up your magnum cases with a .44 Spl load recipe. Because of the slightly larger volume the velocity and pressure will be down a hair so you can more than comfortably load up "full house" .44Spl loads in your Mag brass and you'll easily be well within the CAS shooting limits.

And the nice thing about this is that you'll limit or avoid the fouling ring that needs to be cleaned away before you can safely shoot Magnums again.

Could you give me a quick rundown on the restrictions of different categories? Will my choice of caliber (.357) limit me in any way?

Only if it's an adjustable sights revolver. Only age based categories and "B" Western are allowed to use the guns with adjustable sights. If you choose/chose any sort of fixed sight .357 revolver then you're fine for any and all cartridge shooting classes.

For more about this and other topics anyone can download the SASS Shooter's Handbook that covers the rules for CAS events from;
