Today I heard a report of a failure-to-fire in a hunting situation. The hunter said that it'd been eight degrees at the time. Subsequently it was found that 6 (of 20) did not fire, although the remainder of the box (of Hornady 80463) did fire, and other cartridges from other boxes (of different loads) all fired normally; the hunter said that the six misfiring cartridges all had solid firing pin indentations, though not as deep as those which fired. If the rifle is all OEM (as was claimed), and clean (as was claimed), and if it was eight degrees centigrade (as was claimed), and if the ammunition was stored and handled carefully ever since it was purchased (as was claimed), and if it appeared to be in new condition (as was claimed), and if six cartridges from the same box all misfired when fourteen didn't and other cartridges from loads didn't, that makes me suspect the ammunition. I suggested the the hunter contact Hornady and/or Korth.

Have there been any reports of primer failure in any production lots of Hornady 80463?

One source that would likely know for sure would be Hornady. I had issues with some of their ammo and they had all sorts of records to get them sorted. FWIW they use CCI and/or Winchester primers to load their ammo.
