Im looking for a 12 gauge pump with a 28" barrel to hunt geese, ducks, turkey, upland and clays, in other words it will be a do it all gun. I know they are 2 very different guns in that one is blued/walnut and the other is matte/plastic. I like the looks of both and would be able to get both to fit well, as they are very simular in stock specs. I wanna talk quality, fit and finish, durability, and performance. I would say the bulk of my hunting would be waterfowl with some turkey and clays mixed in. If you were in the market for one "do it all" gun which one would you pick?

The Supernova is a better all around firearm, but th Wingmaster is a very good gun for the price.

The Supernova has less felt recoil, and some other nice features like disassembly without tools (not sure if the 870 does), and the design is very simple and reliable.

I have a nova, and I love it so much I want to get a supernova.

Supernova...they are just plain sweet. The finish will take anything you can throw at it, the action is smooth and they have a "magazine bypass" that lets you be loaded with duck loads, but load in a turkey load without emptying the mag first.

The Wingmaster is nice, and the 870 is a very good platform ("Mr Potato Head" of shotguns). But you are paying more for the Wingmaster finish, you don't gain anything mechanically over a cheap 870.

While the price point might be the same, I'd say for "one gun" it'd be better to compare the regular plain jane 870 to the supernova. I'd still pick the Supernova.

Having owned both, the Supernove kicked the 870 out of the safe. Way less felt recoil, smooth operation and it just points better for me. The adjustment in the stock is a nice feature. The magazine bypass is nice too. The rotating bolt seems like a much more solid design the the 870's style bolt.

i would go with the wingmaster anyday of the week .talk about a proven track record it speaks for it self 870 wingmaster number 1 pump shot gun for how many years DUTCH

You might want to shoulder both and see which you like better. The wingwaster has a very traditional feel to it(Of course it would, it is the tradition) I found the supernova to feel to spaceaged for my liking. Brobably something to get used to. They are like cowboy Hats, they might all say 7.25 on the tag but they will all fit completly different.

Supernova also feels like swinging a 300lbs pig around. You have to shoulder both, and one will speak to you. The stock spec are totally different, with benelli being a 3/8 inch longer, more drop in comb.

Otherwise they will both handle the chore.

This is such a terrible decision to make! I have almost next to no way of shouldering both because it would be a cold day in hell before any dealer actually has both in stock.

On one hand the Synthetic and 3.5" Supernova speaks to me saying it would be a great waterfowling gun and be ok for evreything else. It is certainly more heavy, bulky and longer overall than a wingmaster. But the comfortech and synthetic overmolded rubber are nice features to have in the swamp.

Then theres the 3" Wingmaster with its age old great looks, sleek design and handling. This gun has a track record like no other and I feel like it would do evreything I need well. Aftermarket barrels are a dime a dozen too!! The only thing is, as nice as that blued metal and walnut is I would be worried about it while I was actually out hunting with it. And it does not have the 3.5" capability.

My two other rifles I hunt deer and moose with are both blued metal and walnut. I do take care of my guns and would have no problem taking care of a Wingmaster, it just seems like a waterfowling gun has to be synthetic now a days.

I think the Benelli's are ugly. The Wingmaster definitely has them in the looks department. Truth is, though, that in the muddy river bottom or corn field, a synthetic is the way to go. I have a decent sxs for the uplands where it is easier to "cradle" your gun. I closed my eyes and bought a Supernova for waterfowl and don't regret it. It is a solid and reliable work horse.

+1 for the Supernova

Sherlock, there are factory adaptors on the comfortech stock that can adjust l.o.p as well as drop in comb.

Comparing the Supernova to the Remmy 870 is like comparing apples to oranges. I am not saying that the Remmy is a P.O.S it is far from it just the Supernova is a far superior firearm. I have over 10,000 rounds threw mine and haven't had a minutes trouble with it.

No...it's more like comparing apples to huge turd chunks!!! The 870 110% is a much better shotgun hands down!!! Nova, super or otherwise, is a huge waste of money. Benelli is over priced, hyped up, garbage!! ...I'd even take a Maverick by "Toss"berg over the Nova!

I know for a fact that neither one is hyped up garbage!!! The 870 Wingmaster is actually selling for $50 more than a Benelli Supernova now. I have no doubt that either one will work great for my intent. I am trying to pick a "do it all" shotgun that I can hunt ducks, geese, turkeys, pheasent, upland and clays.

I dont know if I can see myself carrying a Supernova through a field for pheasent, may be too big and bulky. I also may have the need for a shorter slug barrel in the future for hunting deer. Supernova barrels are like big foot sightings, hardly ever come along and when you find one they cost upwards of $400-$500!!

I dont know I think the Wingmaster in 3" with a 28" barrel will do just about anything I want it to. And with the addition of an extra 21" barrel in the future I will have evreything I need in one gun!

You do not have to marry either one of these. Just pick one. They are both good choices and the best offered in their price range. If the one you pick does not turn your crank, cut her loose and or trade her for the other. Then you will know. All the opinion in the world may not be right for you. This is your delema, and one that many would like to have.

I found the pump arm on the nova to be really thick and uncomfortable, does a wingmaster have a wide forestock as well?

kinda off topic but what would be a fair price for a used wingmaster?

I have handled both, and if I were you I would be getting the supernova if you're likely to do more waterfowl, and the 870 if you're likely to do more upland. Of course, this is to say nothing about how one or the other will fit you compared to me. On that subject - about your trouble with handing them both. When I had narrowed down my last shotty purchase to two OUs I wanted to handle them both before ordering. So I posted on a local (nova scotia) hunting site about two OUs that I was consdering. They had one at the local gunshop and a friendly site-member had the other so I went over to his place and got to shoulder it that way. Might be something to try, either on this site or another more local one. SUrely you can find an 870 to try at a dealer - then just a matter of finding a nova/supernova and someone who's willing to let you check it out.

I've never shot a Supernova, but I have to say, the 870 is probably the most tried/tested/true shotguns in history. It's admired everywhere. I don't think I've ever encountered a sweeter action on any pump shotgun...and I've shot a few. My Browning BPS is a great machine, but can't hold a candle to the WM.

As for shoulder and swing... well, I've got an O/U which topples them all in that category.. but apples to apples... the Wingmaster has my vote.

Ditto to that - I've got a beretta ultralight OU that I bought off another site member here - it's SO FAST that I can miss TWICE before you'll even think of shouldering your pump - lol!
