What is up with everyone wanting a gun that will shoot over 1000fps? Pellets are not very efficient moving through the air with high drag coefficients and when you push them up at or over the sound barrier (right at 1000fps) they are unstable and acurracy suffers. Thats why PCP FT shooters stay just below in the low 900's. Is it just the number that is ###y?

Some of the very nicest to shoot airguns are the vintage 10M match rifles, and they are generally shooting at under 600 FPS. More than adequate for plinking at 25 - 30 yards. Many of the vintage sporter springers shooting in the 700 - 800 FPS range are likewise a pure joy to shoot.

I agree, my go to plinking/starling rifle is an old iron sight BSF S60.
It has leather seals and gets 700fps with 8.4 gr JSB Exacts.
It may twang some, but it gets the deed done.
For spring guns I like something shooting .177 around 900ish. It's a nice speed and they aren't too harsh.
For PCPs though there is really no reason not to run them as hot as possible with the heaviest pellet. I mean the 20-40gr offerings out there in .22
So long as you can get a decent shot-string then it's all fine.
My QB78 on a reg'd HPA bottle will put-out about 70-80 shots in the 23FPE range shooting Premier Hollowpoints 840ish. I would definately like to see it run 900 with Kodiaks someday (it's possible). Of course it doesn't give-up any smoothness at those high speeds and I can turn it down fairly easily to extend the shooting.
I'll get a .177 barrel for it one of these days and hope to launch them around 950.

Subsonic [trick pellets ]are both inaccurate and will damage a spring gun.Magnum springers only work best with heavy for caliber pellets like Kodiaks.Air turbulence over 900 fps and accuracy don't mix.Like ping pong in a tornado.It's all marketing hype for the gullible..................Harold
