Surefire DSF reviews?

Hey, so I've been looking into lighting options for my 590A1's

I've put the Magpul SGA furniture on my shotguns and mounted a x300 ultra (which juggles between my Glock, AR 15, and shotgun). The x300 ultra has been an awesome light and has proven itself on course and on the range. However, I've found that it mounted on the fore end is a bit cumbersome. Due to grip vs mounting position it's a bit of a stretch to manipulate and the only solution I've seen us the tape switch end cap.

Looking for solutions, I've considered insight, surefire's DSF and other weapon mounted lights. Most raise the same problem with ergonomics/mechanics.

The DSF seems like the right tool for the right job, it's integrated, has multiple light functions and controls and puts out either 200 or 600 lumens.

I'm a big fan of bright lights and I think the DSF is the choice, I just haven't really heard any reviews. It falls slightly cheaper in price then an x300 ultra and the tape switch.

Has anyone picked one up yet?

The DSF was my first choice but I found a great deal on the previous 'GEN (621LM) so I ended up with that as I was more than satisfied with the 200LM output from having had the model for an 870. Apparently Calgary Shooting Centre has them for $335 which is a great price for that light. All I can say is that if you've never used them go for it. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

I picked up a DSF for my new Mossberg 590 last week at Calgary Shooting Centre. I haven't had a chance to mount it yet but I am hoping to do so tonight or tomorrow. I have owned a few older generation SureFire shotgun forends over the years and I will say that the DSF is certainly a beefier unit. The light portion is shorter and larger diameter and the batteries go side by side rather than stacked one after the other. This results in the shorter light but also a slightly chunkier front end of the forend.

The entire body is polymer with no rubber griping surfaces like the previous models. From what I can tell so far, it does feel pretty good in hand. And being all polymer, it can be stippled if you feel it need to be grippier; which is one of my complaints with the old ones. With sweaty or wet hands I could never seem to get what felt like a firm grip. Speaking of grip, my hand always felt cramped holding the old generation forends; like there just wasn't quite enough room to get a good solid grip while pumping (I know, that's what she said), but the new DSF feels better so far. I'll know for sure when I get it mounted on the new gun.

Once I get it mounted, I'll try to get it out to the range and get a few pics and a proper review posted.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm looking forward to a review once mounted.

After doing a couple of low light courses I've seen the great advantages of a brighter light (I've never been concerned about back splash from reflections/confined areas).

I like that with light "dropping" low on the grip it gives an anchor for your hand to feed the action forward. I would hope there would be a form factor to the rear of the grip to give the hand more traction in racking back.

wondering how this would look and function on a 14" mossy. Ive been reading info on it and although they are shorter they look to be a much larger unit compared to the older models.

As luck would have it, mine happens ot be one of the new 14" Mossbergs. ;) I'm just waiting for the package from CTCS containing my Magpul SGA butt stock and Mesa tactical sidesaddle to arrive so I can dissemble reassemble the shotgun with all the new goodies in one go. The problem is that Canada Post seems ot have lost the package. Was supposed to be delivered on the 10th and here it is the 14th... :( They started a trace so I'm sure it will turn up next week.

I may just go ahead and put the DSF on this weekend anyway, just to get some pics. I didn't realize there were so many people interested in it!

Upon some initial inspection. What you saved on oal your paying for in general bulkiness. There is next to no grip on it, nothing a bit of grip tape won't fix and the dual side buttons for illumination feel a little awkward. We will have to see how it feels on the gun. That being said this unit is very light which is a bonus, I was expecting a much heavier package. The light itself is insanely bright which is a definite plus over my old forend.

All in all I would say it's definitely a step up from the older models and the simplification of the sku's is nice. I don't have to go through 10 sku's to figure out what I needed.

Well it fits like a glove. Some would say to bulky but I don't think you could get away with less or more...

I had the opportunity to test it today in the store. I'll keep looking for the older model. There is very little grip on that forend, it's fairly slippery in touch and the switches....well, I just don't like it. Too much light for indoor application. It's lightweight though.
