So after hunting (it was a rainy weekend after all), I took apart my 11-87 to clean it, and had some light surface rust on the gas cylinder and the gas cylinder collar. I cleaned it with some Hoppes cleaning solvent, then oiled the whole thing with some Hoppes lubricating gun oil... How bad is it that there was some rust and now possibly some light pitting?? Next time I'm bringing gun oil with me to the hunt camp....

If you don't care about appearances. Not bad at all. My hunting shotguns all show signs of light pitting from hard use in crap weather. Never hurt their function at all

any black remington Ive owned rusts like crazy. I got tired of it and am in the process of painting my newest black one.
strip it to bare metal,2 coats rust paint, 2 coats of tan, 3 coats of matte clear acylic sealer.

I found oil wasn't enough on my 870. I use car wax -- just rub on, rub off -- and that seems to at least make it manageable, if not solve it. Guns never get that glossy shine, but they do have a bit of that 'new car smell' for a while.
