Probably been cover many times before, but search is a pain.

I have been looking for a crate of 7.62x39 surplus ammo, but with the options available I have no idea what to get. Some say the cheapest. Some say get the ones with the strip clips. I almost went for the Chinese, as I thought this was the only stuff around.

My mind says go Russian, no reasoning behind this decision. Only because it is Russian.

I would like to know about everyone's experiences with surplus ammo. What seems to be the ideal all-rounder.

Consistency has to be my only concern as misfires are a pain. And if I buy 1400 rounds and only half fire. I could have spent the same amount of money for 700 rounds that are pretty much guaranteed to fire. But, that is my logic.

7.62 X 39 ammo

I have been shooting the czech ammo by Sellier & Bellot out of my VZ58. No problems at all. 1200 rds. For $200. It has corrosive primers but i've never tried anything else. Picked it up from Wolverine.

I have tested many different brands of surplus in a good bolt rifle and it was all good except the Polish.
Jim, if you get the chance try some of that non-corrosive Chinese stuff. There's different coloured boxes of it. I have a crate of the red box. The bullets are lead cored, flat type base and actually don't shoot better than the steel cored stuff in my gun.

The important thing to remember is that it is SURPLUS. Availability may change at any time without notice. Get what you can, when you can. It can run out at any time and have a heck of a dry spell or prices can shoot through the roof. Yes, the Czeck ammo comes on stripper clips and is an advantage until you have several 5 gallon pails full of empty stripper clips.

Its my opinion that the non-corrosive ammo is over-rated and over-priced. Your rifle needs to be cleaned anyways, and will still rust regardless of ammunition type. My advice is to stock up when the stocking is good. I've shot more than a crate in a single weekend, and my nephews will shoot as long as I'm handing ammunition to them. A couple crates of the stuff is not excessive. Food for thought: Dirty ammo is much better than none at all. It all goes bang and the gun still needs to be cleaned.

Meh ... Polish/Russian/Czech/Chinese whatever ....... it's all surplus, corrosive, steel cased & in the average semi SKS or CZ858 you'll never notice any difference in accuracy. Buy on price since that's about the only difference you'll really notice. Buy in quantity when you can! Stack em high, stack em dry! Clean properly and your rifle will never know the difference. Unless you're shooting a decent bolt action everything else is over rated & over priced IMO. If you happen to have a nice CZ etc bolt action then that's different!

Anyone one have a line or supply of 7.62X39 brass??? I am desperate for some and can't find anything locally... all sources have dried up... if you have any info or supply, please PM me... I am in the market.

You need to clean your rifle anyway. Why do people worry about corrosive or non corrosive. Important part is it worth shooting corrosive and what is the price difference.

If the commies and the Peoples Liquidation Army know anything it is how to make ammo and weapons that will function.
For any SKS or CZ858 the ammo will probably outperform the firearm and the shooter.

For a case of beer, I am sure someone here might even open up and tell you which three rounds in the crate of 1,400 might not work.

I've saved brass from PRVI and S&B commercial loads, but I haven't found brass anywhere else. The PRVI soft points is nasty accurate out of my CZ bolt action and great for hunting but seems to make little difference out of an SKS other than you need SP for hunting.

Not too worried about corrosive. Reliability is where I am concerned... I was going originally going for the Marstar Chinese SKS/ammo deal, but since they are very much similar performance, reliability. I am going Czech for the 140 stripper clips.

An other thing if interest is the 127 grain ammo I keep seeing around. I was under the impression that surplus rounds most are roughly 122, 123, 124 g. be it steel or lead core. So what is this 127 grain stuff?

Czech comes in cases of 1120 or 1200, so 112 or 120 chargers, not 140.

I've found East German surplus M43 to be the most accurate 7.62x39. It was sold in Canada by Districorp in the late 1990's. They were selling it and Hungarian surplus M43 at the same price per case.
