AR7 (Henry / Armalite ) .22 Survival Rifle

.... Speaking from experience with the original version (Armalite)... the accuracy leaves lot to be desired; 'may be somewhat ammunition sensitive. It is very compact, floats, and doesn't rust ! Extreme cold doesn't affect it as much as other rifles I've fired. If you get one, make a plug/filler that fits between the two arms (fingers?) of the butt where it attach's to the receiver, otherwise, with the normal type of rough handling this little gem gets, it may break. The accuracy is acceptable, for practical purposes, within about 40 yards, but much beyond the 50 yard mark, to hit a rabbits head would be more good luck than skill. You can assemble it an have the first shot off in between 15 to 20 seconds. When folded (disassembled?) it's nice to have some sort of protective cover or sock, over it to minimize scratches and gouges ! There are aftermarket add ons, but they detract from it's designed purpose. All in all, if you accept it's limitations, if the Henry version is as good as the original, they're a fine rifle for the purpose ! And a box or two, of .22 long rifle is easy to carry, effective and if all else fails, fun to plink with ! ..... David K. ( PS if you're tempted to pull it completely apart, be very patient, and careful that you don't lose parts ! Better not to give in to temptation ! )

If you are on a quad why not pack a real gun?

There are lots of good compact options out there.

Personally I think most of the survial guns are pretty crappy in terms of accuracy and overall function. Kind of like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

I tend to agree with you. Most are built for "emergencies" , like a plane crash or something. I did have one of those plastic AR-7's and it shot ok but I think an old Cooey would have been better for sure.

My Marlin Papoose was pretty good tho....

yeah about a month or two ago i was looking at putting together a packable survival gun.
problem is that most are just intended for being packed behind an airplane seat for 10 years and maybe used to fire 3-4 shots. their accuracy is piss poor and often they are designed for cheap mass production not accuracy/quality. problem is that theyre *not* cheap.

check out the BLR takedowns as a more expensive solution thats an actual *real* gun in a takedown package or the NEF handi-rifles for a sub-$200 solution. or just get a gun boot for your ATV and take along any real gun. the 'survival rifles' are not really plinkers.
