Edmonton native Susan Nattrass won gold last Saturday in the women's trap at the 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.

Elena Tkach of Russia entered the finals as the favourite, scoring 70 of 75 targets. But then she failed in the finals, hitting only 16 of 25 targets, and finished sixth.

Olympic medallists Suzanne Balogh of Australia, Maria Quintanal of Spain and Bo Na Lee of South Korea did not qualify for the final.

China won the team competition, scoring 201 points in the 75-target event. Britain also had 201 points, but won silver as Chinese team members were better in the last of the series.

Russia took bronze with 196 points, while Canada placed ninth with 191

Congratulations to Dr. Nattrass. She has once again placed Canada's name at the top of the list in international competition. For those unfamiliar with her record of accomplishments, a quick google search of her name will bring hours of reading.

She's an inspiration. She is in her 5th decade of clay target competition and is still winning. She's old enough to be the mother of many of the shooters she sent packing, maybe even grandmother to some. Outstanding.

Sort of gives us middle-aged shooters hope, eh?;)

Other Canadian women competing were:

Cynthia Meyer - 8th (a very fine result)
Sandra Honour - 59th (a pity, she can do much better.)

The lone Canadian Junior woman competing was Yassamin Yassini - 19th and last.

Canadian men include:

Curtis Wennberg - 53rd
Tye Bietz (another Edmontonian) - 58th
Frank Kurenda - 122nd

The sole Canadian Junior men's entry was Giuseppe Di Salvatore - 30th.

International trap is a very competitive game. Between Curtis' 53rd and Tye's 58th there was only a 1 bird difference, a countback system is used to determine who missed first, in the common event of a tie. Missing only 1 bird per round would get you a finish no higher than 8th (mens division). In this light, Canada's showing overall is commendable, and Dr. Nattrass' win simply outstanding.
