SVD

The fact we only have svts as a semi 54r gun in this country is painful especially when you can get it for 35cpr. Honestly a t81 svd clone would be great but id give a nut for a pkm, or something that can abuse that 1940 legal loophole about belt fed guns not having limits. Mg3 clone in 308 too pls

Were the civilian Tiger rifles ever imported into Canada? Could they be?

Tigr was not imported. When they could be imported, the svd was equally available (from Bulgaria from what I understand) and then both were prohibited at the same time.

Medved is still NR and was imported in limited quantities. It is out of production now though + sanctions are in place.

A lookalike t81 is more likely.

I hate to be that guy, as I'd give my left nut for an SVD. However I think it'd be too tall an ask. Accommodating the larger cartridge would require enough redesigning to probably need a new FRT and magazine. TI asking Polytech to design and tool up for a brand new rifle for the Canadian market is likely to go over poorly.

I remember discussions on here from years back about a .308 variant (CS/LR14) for export that was displayed at a defence show in China. However I don't think it went anywhere, as it hasn't been seen since. I think a more reasonable option would be to ask for an SR in something with a bit more legs like 6.5 Grendel.

I recall SIR Mail order had SVD's listed in their cataog around 1990. They were non restricted (as most all rifles were at the time).
A local expert (gunplumber ?) told me that approx 60 made it to N America. 40 to the USA and 20 to Canada.
I got mine from John at Marstar!!
THAT was the time for Soviet equipment. Their 2nd Gen night vision was also breifly available, but I didnt have the 2.5K for that :(

Unless they managed to easily squeeze 2moa or better out of it id see next to no advantage over the SR. The 3moa average for Type 81s compliments the ballistic range of 7.62x39 decently well. Making hits on a respectable sized target out to 600m is fairly doable with those setups. If the same gun was chambered in 54r, id only be frustrated watching my more powerful and expensive rounds hit everywhere but where i was pointing beyond that range.

Id rather hope for a completely new and more capable firearm that can then be modded to resemble a SVD.

That makes me very sad.

If you watch the Forgotten Weapons video he talks about how the accuracy standard for the SVD was not very high, especially with the issue ammunition. They had to go to commercial hunting ammo to get anything close to what most of us would consider decent in 2024.

I wish someone would do something SVDish with an M78 Valmet in .308 since that gun has a 24" heavy barrel and being a Valmet it should be fairly accurate... I've seen the sniper version with the SVD style stock but never any range reports and people always run them with the bipod which could do a POI shift.

People tried. It looks like sh*t in my opinion. I don't know if it's that somehow no one has been able to copy the SVD stock or just has no concept of the golden ratio :)

People have also tried for a SVT based SVD lookalikes - the result is ugly as sin

(Personally I have no interest in a Valmet SVD lookalike)
