Just got an SVT 40 and the only ammo I can find for it is S&B commercial 180 grain bullet....No Military loads available.
Question is...Can the 180 gr. be used in the SVT without damaging the rifle given that the military load is a 150gr. or so....
With the M1 and M14 type rifles loads above 168gr. are discouraged because of possible damage to the rifle and the SVT looks a lot more delicate than the U.S. rifles.
Anyone have experience with this ?

i only shoot Igman commercial softpoints in my SVT, mainly because i dont want to get into detail-cleaning something as complex as an SVT just for shooting a box or so of corrosive ammo.
the Igmans are 150 grain though. oh, and dispel any notion of reloads because of the fluted chamber.

AFAIK with the Garands, the risk with shooting over 180gr bullets was bending the op-rod.
have you seen the op-rod on an SVT? sure its a radically different system, but the op-rod is toothpick thin. personally, id shoot 150gr tops, just because SVT parts arent that easy to replace (unless you want to get into threading your own rods for OP rods). i would err on the conservative side. of course, YMMV.

Just turn the regulator down to the lowest setting it will function on and shoot it.

7.62 mm. Russian Cartridge, 7.62x54R, or 7.62x54mm Rimmed Russian

The 7.62x54R , was adopted by the Russian Army in 1891, and has been used through all wars since to date. It is a rimmed cartridge that has a large diameter body and the outer edge of the case is beveled. All Mosin-Nagants, Finnish Nagants, Nagant Carbines, Sniper Rifle Dragunov (SVD), and Tokarev rifles use this cartridge.

Brass - Sellier Bellot does not reload well. Norma brass and any US manufactured does reload well. I suggest purchasing new Norma or Lapua Brass from Midway USA or other listed above. Granted it will probably cost you more for 100 new pieces than what you may have paid for the rifle. One easy way of remedying this is to purchase three or four rifles - then because of economy of scale you will feel you are getting a better bargain!

Powder - IMR 3031 or IMR 4064 are both good powders for this round.

The POSP 8x42 SVD scope I have came with instructions that were translated a while ago by a friend that served in the red army. It was calibrated for 185g rounds but i've also read 181g works as well, can't find the article that referanced the 181g round. Yes I know the SVD and SVT-40 is not the same rifle but they are designed to use the same cartridge/bullet weight.

That surplusrifle "data" is incorrect. There are numerous "heavy ball" loadings in the 182-185 gr. range but 185 gr. was not the standard weight.

7.62x54r.net has far more complete and accurate ammo info here.
