Svt-40 as a hunting rifle?

Just thinking of a truck gun that might take a deer down if need be. Probably reload some surplus with more suitable bullets for hunting. I'd prefer a little hotter calibre than the 7.62x39 but it looks like the sks are a little shorter and handier. The 7.62x54R looks to be similar to a 308 whereas the 39 seems a little doggy.
Thoughts?

A little difficult sometimes finding 54R in SP or JHP but, yeah it's got the power for just about everything N.America's got to offer.
I sometimes carry mine while hiking and whatnot. Leaves me feeling a bit safer than my SKS does.

I would say as a hunting rifle, it would be great, but to me a truck gun should be shorter and handy for quicker shots. SVT's are a lot of things, but quick and handy isn't one of them, so i'd vote for the SKS, or if you can find one maybe an M44 or M38.
Not to mention that for people like me (although i am working on it) who aren't the greatest with irons, an sks will shoot farther than i reliably can.

Svt is tough because of the scope mounting arrangement. Mounts are hard to find for them as well and most limit you to original WWII optics. A side mount choate or promag rail is probably the best option for the SKS. They require a small amount of tools and skill to mount but it's a nice solid mount. The scout type rail that replaces the rear sight is a good second choice but requires a long eye relief scope. There's also a new long rail out there that attaches to the rear sight and the dust cover pin. One of our sponsors is hawking it, and some seem to like it. PS put a folding stock on that SKS for an even better truck gun experience. I did. :)

I've seen some SVT-40's done up with really nice optics setups.

I think the SVT has a much better potential than the Sks. Privvi Partisan makes lead tip 7.62x54r rounds for that don't they?

Not a bad rifle....till you have to take it apart and clean it.

Funny you should say that. I hear it all the time yet, I can get mine apart in about 2 minutes, cleaned thoroughly in about 15 minutes and reassembled before my rising crust Pizza is ready.

Want a real disassembly that seriously sucks? Try the Mossberg Tactical .22

I'm fairly certain that any left side drill and tap mount that fits an SKS will likely fit an SVT-40 with minimal modification. Problem lies in permanent modifying such a pristine piece of Soviet history. Then again, I refinished the AVT stock on mine so, perhaps I should look into a mount as well.

Yes, I am obviously very proud of my SVT and the SVT-40 in general. What's not to like? It's gorgeous, has an awesomely effective and loud muzzle brake permanently attached, kicks about half as much as my Mosin and has operated without malfunction for me on multiple occasions in everything from +45 to -35 clear, rain and snow conditions.

That's pretty.

I don't suggest adding side mounts or rails to an SVT either :). I've got three of them now, 40 Izzy, 41 Tula, 42 Kovrov. The first and the last are AVT stocked as well, awesome and accurate rifles, but if you're looking for a beater truck gun that's easily modified get a refurb SKS. It'll be accurate enough for an occasional deer or coyote, ammo's cheap for plinking and parts and accessories abound. Just my opinion though :)
