SVT-40 assembly question

i'm doing a reassembly on my svt-40 after cleaning it.

theres a screw for the gas system that screws into the port at the front of the barrel, right in front of the gas adjustment nob.

how tight does that screw have to be?

what setting should the little adjustment nob be at to start with?

Just snug the threads, don't crank them right down. I put a drop of oil on the threads before reassembly.

The gas valve setting depends on the individual rifle and type of ammo, outside temperature, etc. Use the lowest setting that reliably ejects casings a foot or two. One of my SVTs likes 1.3, the others like 1.5. They will run at 1.3, but the casings just dribble out onto my elbow. Take a rubber mallet when shooting the first time, if the gun fails to eject and really jams you can use it to tap the bolt back and extract the case. I've never needed it, but its always there in the range bag just in case.

Just got back from the range. I set the gas adjustment at 1.3 and the thing wouldn't eject a cartridge. It would eject them out of the barrel but wouldnt kick it out of the receiver and the bolt would come forward and jam the empty cartridge between the bolt and barrel.

And of course I forgot to bring a wrench to make changes.

yeah you pretty much need the wrench with you at the range i have a rasheed i was setting up and it would bite into the cases before they got out of the reciever but i had a pair of pliers and was able to adjust until it was good oh well i guess you get to go out to the range again darn it

Tight the gas tube very securely,not to strip the threads,but tight enough or the tube will come loose upon firing and the gas valve wont stay adjusted. 1.3 is a good setting to start, as the others said, this will vary from rifle to another and with the weather also. 1 of my SVT needed 1.5 to work good during winter in the -25c*.

Should I have to remove the gas adjustment when I initially clean off cosmoline? I soaked the entire barrel in mineral spirits but i didnt actually remove that valve and clean it. How do you take it out?

Yes you must remove it and each time you shoot corrosives ammos remove again for cleaning. To remove it, unscrew and remove the gas tube and push on the front of the gas valve, the valve will exit by the rear. For dissasembly, look at the link below
