SVT-40 Carbines

With either an M44 or SKS style of flip bayonet, those would be awesome SVT "tanker" rifles...

Sooooo tempting... It might even be worth the eternal damnation in Bubba Hell for doing it. There is a thread around here of someone doing an awesome job of it, beyond my skill level really.

Actually, at the skill level it was done at, (at least the one I saw in here), it transcended Bubba into "Beautiful Custom".

You mean the normal variety SVT? Genuine carbine SVT's are unobtanium. There are a lot of creative fakes rolling around, a bunch got chopped into a vague semblance of the original carbines by an importer who took a hacksaw and a blowtorch to a bunch of the Fin capture SVT's a number of years ago.

But you can't go wrong with an SVT... Unless you forget to clean the gas system after firing corrosive. I love mine, love the look of it, love shooting it, it's far more accurate than I had any right to expect. But I don't love cleaning it...

Ok, actually, that's not true. I have a wife and kid. An hour in the evening, alone, cleaning my SVT after an afternoon at the range, really just counts as an extension of "quality time."

You could probably cut the cleaning down to 1/2hr to 45 minutes without cutting any corners. I tend to obsess about my SVT though, and can't seem to get the cleaning done in much under an hour. Can't say I've tried really hard to get it under an hour either.

Sorry yes I meant the readily available dirt cheap SVT's. I take about 30-40 minutes to thoroughly clean my SKS and Mosins after shooting dirty corrosive ammo. I enjoy cleaning firearms same as changing oil sharpening knives or tuning skis. Haven't watched full takedown videos on the SVT yet but I'd imagine there's more to it than an SKS.
 
^^^field stripping the svt is not much more involved than the sks, hardest part is the stock bolt if you don't have the tool. Reinstalling the trigger group is a royal pain, you migh need a good clamp to click it back into the catch. Read through the svt-40 sticky in the red rifles forum, it has all the info you need on breaking it down.
 
Best thing for trigger group I found is using a large wooden dowel and with a light tap of the hammer she pops right back in. I seen some people cut slots in bolt drivers to take off the stocks seems to work well if you do it right ive yet to try it myself
