SVT 40 gurus, I am in need of your help.

Tomorrow I'm taking my SVT to our local Service Rifle match (just for fun) and that match is a course of fire of 10 rounds from the bench, 10 rounds from standing, and 10 rounds kneeling (thanks to a CFO required berm that's about 20 feet from the benches).

Obviously, since I'm not about to pay $80/ea for spare SVT magazines, I need to reload using the charger/stripper clips for the 7.62x54R round.

Since the 7.62x54R is a rimmed round much like the .303 British, should I use the down-up-down-up-down pattern of the Enfield charger, or should I use the pyramid style of the Mosin-Nagant? (I haven't had a chance to fire this rifle yet, and tomorrow is it's first time out in my hands.)

I'm thinking that since the Lee-Enfield magazine is a staggered round magazine and the Mosin-Nagant is a straight-line magazine, I'm better off to use the Enfield style of loading the charger - as the SVT magazine is a staggered round design. Am I out to lunch here, or am I on to something?

Thanks for the advice.

I've never done anything special to load my SVT with chargers. I've found that it will either load properly, or should a rim get behind the one bellow, it won't allow it to go past the feed lips. I think it has something to do with the design of the mag and follower, that only allows it to be loaded one way.

I don't know if its just me but my svt doesn't really care how I put them in, it couldn't hurt to try it out and see what works.

The pyramid style loaded chargers seemed to work well, however, the surplus Russian ammo I was using was, shall we say, problematic.

Out of 30 rounds, all from the same tin, I had 6, yes that's SIX, failures to fire, with deep primer strikes!!

OUCH!!!!

I also had numerous failures to extract, I didn't keep count as I was too busy counting the FTF's!! Phuck me, that was the WORST performance I've ever had out of a surplus rifle and ammo!!

The gas regulator on my SVT is set at 1.3, so I'll be trying out the different settings (going to go higher on the regulator) next time at the range.

As an FYI, another guy at the Service Rifle match was shooting an SVT, and he got precisely ONE shot out of his rifle when the surplus ammo case separated on him!!! Let's just say that the air was a touch BLUE around the bench where we were trying to get that separated case out!!!(fortunately, he was able to use the cleaning rod to knock the separated case out of the chamber)

Not a good day for the two SVT 40's shooting at the match today, for sure!!

As an aside, my SKS with Czech surplus ammo never missed a beat!! All 30 rounds went off without a hitch, and I had the bayo extended for the hell of it!! That SKS put 7 rounds into the head of our targets at 100 yds elbows only on the bench! (best performance I've ever had from an SKS that way-although the extended bayonet seemed to raise the POI as I was aiming at the centre of the target we use - sorry no photos)
