SVT 40 feeding problems. Mag or ammo?

I put about 300 rounds through my svt so far. The first 100 was Czech ammo and it fed well on 1.5 and 1.3 no malfunctions. The next 200 rounds was this Chinese copper washed surplus and the gun has regular hangups trying to feed it. I get jams and stove piped unspent rounds. At 1.3 the bolt catch would fail to stop the bolt and the bolt would sometimes fail to strip rounds from the mag. Dialing down to 1.2 seems to have corrected this but I still get jams and unfired stove piped shells. I cant see any problems with the mechanics of the magazine. What should I try next?
 
I'd actually dial the gas in the other direction and open it a bit. In my experience, the Czech zilver-tip (if that's what you were using) is a fair bit "hotter" than the Chinese heavy ball.

At 1.3, is it throwing the spent Chinese ammo as far on ejection? If not, then you're probably under-gassed with the Chinese.
 
It usually ejects an unspent round just enough to get stove piped in the bolt carrier on close. Thats at 1.2, at 1.3 I was just having issues with bolt stripping rounds and hold open on empty. I'll try it at 1.5 next time. Thanks
 
I'm with grelmar, the Czech x54 is hotter, ejecting out of my one svt is proof enough of that lol. Turn it back up to 1.5 and see if the Chinese cycles, my one ran Bulgarian silver tip at 1.3 fairly reliably but would not have enough gas to properly function on new production Chinese. It runs it great set at 1.5, Czech however beats the hell out of it while cycling at 1.5
 
Where do you guys get Czech X54r?

My SVT40 gas setting needs to be increased from 1.3 on Bulgarian to 1.5 for the cheap Chinese CanAm machine gun ammo. No problems.
 
Ya, I find the Czech ammo is a lot hotter than the Chinese. I can run my SVT at 1.1 for the Czech, but I need 1.2 for new production Chinese and 1.3 for the older Chinese stuff. Just dial up your gas setting to 1.5 and try that, if it still doesn't work try 1.7, and don't forget to dial it back if you switch back to shooting the Czech stuff again.

If your bolt is not locking back at 1.3, you need to turn it up, rather than down. The rule of thumb is that the correct gas setting is the lowest one that consistently allows the bolt to lock back.

Looks like you need to dial it up with the Chicom surplus ammo... and then lower it with the Czech stuff.

The SVT-40 gas system is meant to be easily adjustable so Russian soldiers could dial it up once their rifle got dirty and they were unable to clean it in the near future.
