So I have a really nice SVT-40 that I acquired while I was at wolverine a couple months back. Everything is pretty much tight and fitted well on it, I had to make a tool to install the trigger group after ever time I take it out, but that isn't really a problem to me.

The front sling loop, however, that holds the wood/metal heat shields in place rattles and is a little on the loose side for my liking. I have made sure the retaining clip is adjusted properly and flexing it out will not take out any of the movement. The loop doesnt pop off and does stay in place it just seems to me that the fit should be a bit more firm.

Does anyone have any tips to tighten up the slack that doesn't involve altering the appearance of the gun significantly? Or are they just loose and I shouldn't worry about it?
I have searched quite a bit and can not find anything that addresses this problem, if it is actually a problem and not just me being a perfectionist

Thanks

I found the front band and metal handguard put too many variables into the SVT's harmonics for my liking. I shim things with ammo box cardboard.

I am a little reluctant to use anything like tape. When the metal of the gun gets hot from shooting or even from sitting in the sun, the glue on tape tends to melt and make a sticky mess.

I do like the ammo box cardboard shim idea for a temporary fix, will probably do this for a while before I figure out how to tighten it up permanently.

In my experience when the band is loose, it usually has more to do with the fit of the upper and lower metal hand guards and their fit to the stock and wood hand guards respectively. You can check that by removing the sling loop and investigating if there is any play between the parts.

I have one rifle that was almost 3/8" short with its fit into the lower HG metal. Rattled like crazy. You can build this up with a small piece of epoxy putty or the likes on the stock fore end tip or forward portion of the hand guard, as well as possibly creating a shim from some thin brass flat stock or in a pinch a pop can cut to fit under the sling loop.

These parts actually fit the guns wood and each other very nicely and are quite tight, I will have to look and see if the top and bottom shields are "level" with the wood, if they arent level I could bring them up on the top or bottom and out on the sides slightly, to "level" the edge with the wood edge, with thin brass shims and that would most likely take the play out of the loop. I will have to get some pictures up next time I have the gun out :D

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have 3 SVT-40's. One of them requires a hammer to get the damned sling loop on and off, another can be easily done by hand, and the third falls somewhere in between.

Hi,

My SVT 40 has the same problem. I tend to agree to check the shields but if this fails I will shim with thin brass shims.

Thanks guys for all your inputs.

One of my SVT-40 rifles has the same problem. I replaced the refurbish late barrel band with an early style one to put it back into original configuration.

I use cardboard shims until I take the time to make or fit a brass shim.
