I took my SVT-40 out for the first time today to blast off some of my silver tip surplus.

The gas system was set at 1.3 when I bought it, and I never adjusted it. First five rounds ejected with no issues, but after that it wouldn't eject the cases.

I had no tools with me, so I just put the SVT back in it's case and blasted off with my SKS and Mauser.

Why is the gas system adjustable? Why not just have it at a fixed setting so that it always uses maximum pressure, that way it will always eject. No?

When I got home I cranked it up to 1.7. What do you guys have yours set at for the czech silver tip? Is it bad to run it at full pressure?
Thanks.

The gas system is adjustable for different loads/weather/levels of fouling. The idea is to run it on the lowest setting that is reliable, to prevent unnecessary wear and tear or damage.

Running at full pressure will cause excessive wear on many components of the rifle. Piston, op rod, bolt carrier. Bring a tool next time and set it at the lowest setting the still provides reliable feeding.

You only need an 8mm wrench to adjust it. Loosen off the piston, then turn the adjustment with your fingers.

I find it easiest to remove the piston entirely and push the regulator out.

Then I set it back in place at the setting I want and re-tighten the piston.

I find this easier than just trying to turn the regulator without the proper tool.

i posted this a while ago but here it is again.

You must take off top hand guard first. Then remove gas piston. Loosen off the gas cylinder tube with adjustable wrench. Then the regulator pin can be spun by hand just line number straight up for setting you want. Takes like 2 mins once you get the hang of it. Bigger number more gas to piston. I have mine set on 1.3 and works ever time for brass. If you have problems ejecting at that try 1.5. mine has a tendency to come loose so check the regulator if you start to have ejection problems. Make sure every bit of cosmo is out of chamber. i uses copper shotgun brush and solvent and using a drill chuck a section of old cleaning rod. Alternate that and shotgun swab dipped in solvent. No more stickies.

I have run czech silver tip, s&b 180 gr sp, and privi 150 gr sp. All no prob at that setting.

Oh ya make sure you clean after shooting the corrosive. hot water or windex does the trick, and dont forget that gas]piston and cylinder i use pipe cleaner for that.
