SVT 40 gas system is a pain to take down!

at least, this is happening to me...i took off the upper shroud and handguard, and pulled the gas piston rearwards; while doing that, i was using an adjustable wrench trying to loosen it by turning counter-clockwise. wow, i couldn't even move a bit!

how you guys did it? :eek:

How it was explained to me buy an SVT owner a while back...

1) Make sure Rifle is unloaded.
2) Read this...http://www.surplusrifle.com/svt40/rifle/index.asp
3) Have a shot of Vodka in honour of the poor sob's that had to do this during a Russian winter.
...Oh and break free might help.

I never met a gun that I couldn't take apart and put back together again, but the SVT came close!

if i was cleaning my SVT and the enemy did a surprise attack and over ran our base , i would be stab by an enemy bayo and i still havent assemble and installed all the gas rod pieces together . :(

Come on guy's, the SVT is not that hard to disassemble & clean. I do mine every time after shooting it. Maybe the first time was a little tricky but after that it's a piece of cake. I've seen a video where the guy does it all with one hand. Just take your time, & it's no big deal.

It's been a long time since I've taken down my SVT-40, but can you not first remove the rod from the cylinder, allowing you to pull the cylinder off the piston and making it simple to unscrew the piston? I may have to take mine out later to see if I can do that...
